New Bullion Mix To Donwload from FACT

Part of Alex Chase’s One Handed Music stable along with Paul White, Nathan ‘Bullion’ Jenkins is an Acton based hip-hop obsessive who first came to many’s attention with Pet Sounds: in the Key of Dee, a remix project that paired pop monoliths The Beach Boys with late Detroit hip-hop legend J Dilla.

A series of singles for One Handed followed, including a poignant collection of delay-soaked love songs on last year’s Young Heartache EP, and well, here we are.

Bullion has a new single out this month, ‘Say Goodbye to What’; his FACT mix should be the ideal soundtrack to you buying it online, or just illegally downloading it or whatever you kids do these days. David Crosby, Fleetwood Mac, Cabaret Voltaire and more feature.

"Nigeria Afrobeat Special is the fourth addition to the Nigeria Special series, a project initiated by Miles Cleret, owner of the Soundway Record label back in 2004. Cleret’s ambition to distinguish the blossoming music scenes of 1970s Nigeria has lent to an indispensable series of CD and LP compilations documenting the influence of western blues, rock and disco amongst artists and musicians versed in the local musical styles of highlife and juju.

It was Fela Kuti and his musical and political ideals that formed the core of afrobeat’s message. Blending highlife, Yoruba music, funk and jazz, Fela dominated the musical tapestry of 1970s Nigeria and his influence in Nigeria and West Africa led to a craze where most of the bands of the day incorporated this new sound into their repertoires to satisfy the tastes of the audiences of the time. This compilation highlights some of those recordings that have, until now, not seen the light of day.

Appropriately, Fela’s highly sought after version of ‘Who’re you’ lends this set its lead. Originally released on 7” in 1971, It would later be re-recorded at Abbey Road for his album Fela’s London Scene and here is re-issued for the first time ever.

Set for release on 15th February, Nigeria Afrobeat Special is released as a CD digipack and triple LP featuring five bonus tracks not available on the CD. Extensive liner notes are provided.

Juicy Bits for January 2010

Just bought a few tasty tit-bits for January.....

Miss Beats - My World /The Jester 12" (Deep Medi 026)

"Set to shine in 2010, Mizz Beats is the 22 year-old from Hackney (East London) who aided and abetted labelmate Silkie in the creation of one of this year’s certified bangers: ‘Purple Love’. Earning her stripes in the midst of the UK’s grime scene, she has already produced for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Jammer and Lady Sovereign and she is undoubtedly one of the Anti Social Entertainment clique’s brightest prospects alongside Quest, Silkie, Kromestar, J5, Harry Craze and Heny G. Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. An altogether clubbier affair, but no less sophisticated, fans of Gemmy and Joker will undoubtedly approve." (Piccadilly Records)

Tracklisting:

Side 1 - "My World" Listen to MP3.
Side 2 - "The Jester" Listen to MP3.

SBTRKT - Laika 12" (One-Sided Brainmath)

"Amidst the hype of 'who is SBTRKT?' it's easy to forget that quite simply the man/lady is just making dope tunes. Twisted dubstep out of time that manages to sound massive and strip-backed simultaneously...in the same unique vein as the previous workings 'Laika' is another step in SBTRKT carving out his/her own unimitable sound. If only we could get the good folks in Brain Math to invest the extra couple of pence per plate and provide us with another side for their records we'd be in bliss."(Phonica Records)

"Masked man of the moment SBTRKT drops his first release proper on the magic and mysterious BRAiNMATH. Limited info, limited copies, no digital, DJ support comes from Mary Anne Hobbs, Sinden, Oneman etc". (Piccadilly Records)

Tracklisting:

Side 1 - "Laika" Listen to MP3.

MAYER HAWTHORNE - The Ills Fan Club 45 7" (Stones Throw US)

"This is a limited-edition 45 made for the Stones Throw shop, and for Mayer Hawthorne's Europe Tour 2009. It includes both vocal and instrumental versions of a tune that does not appear on Mayer Hawthornes album. However, it has now become available via JUNO RECORDS".

Tracklisting:

Side 1 - "Track 1" Listen to MP3.
Side 2 - "Track 2" Listen to MP3.

PANGAEA - Pangaea EP (Hessle Audio 010)

"Since the impact of the anthemic 'Memories' and 'You & I', the weight of expectation has been lumbered around Pangaea's neck. Now after a brief hiatus he returns with an assuredly exemplary artifact of dubstep soul, maturing six tracks of moving rollidge, modern classical inflections and tech-stepped beat science. In a way, it's possible to label Pangaea as the Sven Weisemann of dubstep, as he approaches the style from an elevated angle of musicality and production values which lends his sound a timeless sheen of quality. But unlike Weisemann, Kevin McAuley is all about the future lurch, creating rhythmic engines tuned with the experience of a lifetime checking D'n'B, Garage and 'step patterns. With the spine-chilling arrangments of 'Why', he twists these influences back upon themselves with a (Funky) house-inspired clip, before aligning the dipping contours of the Ben UFO fave 'Sunset Yellow' with organ chords harking back to EP7 era Auetechre and divas screaming from the deepest rave you've never been to. The tripped formula of '5-HTP' is the masterful centrepiece of the set, displaying well toned subbass muscle and artcore breakbeat forces introduced with a head-melting drone intro, while the unruly 'Neurons' gives a nod to dubstep rave with zooming synthlines and those looking for near-instant soul gratification will find it in the pitch-shifted utterances of gorgeous closer 'Because Of You'. It's all proof, if needed, that Pangaea is at the head of his game and deserves the highest recommendations possible." (Phonica Records)

Tracklisting:

Side 1 - "Why" Listen to MP3.
Side 2 - "Sunset Yellow" / "5-HTP"
Side 3 - "Neurons" Listen to MP3.
Side 4 - "Dead Living" / "Because Of You"

SMITH & MIGHTY - Bass Is Material 12" (Punch Drunk/Unearthed)

"Unearthed is a new Punch Drunk affiliated label with a mission to reissue classic Bristollian sound system music remastered and cut LOUD to heavyweight 12" vinyl for the first time. Bass is Maternal is the title track from the legendary original Smith & Mighty long player, eventually released on their own Three Stripe label in 1994 after lengthy delays.

'U Dub' is a more traditional dubbed steppers rhythm building to a break beat / junglist crescendo. This first 12" is fully dubstep compatible and has been recently revived by top selectors such as as Pinch, Shortstuff and Ben UFO."
(Sounds Of The Universe)

Tracklistings:

Side 1 - "Bass Is Maternal" (feat John Lawrence) Listen to MP3.
Side 2 - "U Dub" Listen to MP3.

DIBIASE/PUDGE - Los Angeles 1/10 10" (All City ACLA 10X10X 1)

"The first in a ten-part series of two-headed10-inch EPs from LA-based producers, coming out monthly through 2010, with each in a full colour jacket designed by B+ (Mochilla).

Kicking off, Dibiase represents HollyWatts in South LA. Making his presence felt beneath the surface over the last few years, only now is he coming overground, with recently dropped 45s on Detroit’s OTW label and Lancashire’s Fat City. P.U.D.G.E, originally from Jamaica, Queens, has most recently been heard on ‘Beat Dimensions Vol 2’, and not so long ago in the mix for Mary Anne Hobbs.

Both beatmakers each serve up five hot lumps of molten rhythm lava to light your lamp, but pressing is limited so be switched on. Full colour artwork sleeve and one pressing only
″.

Tracklisting:

Side 1
1. Dibiase - "WTF"
2. Dibiase - "Thrilla Time Slime"
3. Dibiase - "Spacely Sprocketts" Listen to MP3.
4. Dibiase - "I Pity The Fool" Listen to MP3.
5. Dibiase - "Axel Bop"

Side 2
1. PUDGE - "Intro"
2. PUDGE - "Satta Marijuana" Listen to MP3.
3. PUDGE - "Blips Ahoy Mate'"
4. PUDGE - "Afrilude"

6. PUDGE - "Arabincense"
7. PUDGE & Dibiase - "Smoke It Over"

OM UNIT - Lightgrids 7" (All City AC1X7X 1)

"Following his Joker remix and an inclusion on the hefty 'Elevator Music' comp from Fabric, Om Unit moves onto a dope 7" for the All City crew. With years working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronica, he's really found his niche in a blend of slow boogie house/hiphop beats and classic analog synthlines, heard on the ace 'Lavender' with its majestic Vangelis-styled synths, or the melancholic arrangements of the sludgy-slow 'Lightworks'. Beat heads like Benji B and Alex Nut are already giving this props so you know what u gotta do..." (Boomkat Records)

Tracklisting:

Side 1 - "Lightgrids" Listen to MP3.
Side 2 - "Lavender" Listen to MP3.

ABOUT ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES

All Tomorrow's Parties has been promoting festivals and concerts throughout the world for the last ten years. It was founded in the wake of Belle and Sebastian’s Bowlie Weekender, with Mogwai curating in the unusual setting of Pontins Holiday Camp, Camber Sands. Since then the festival has appeared every year and has expanded across the globe continuing to set itself apart from large scale corporate festivals by staying intimate and fan-friendly. The line-ups are chosen by significant bands or artists which results in eclectic events that combine performances by legendary and influential acts with appearances by the latest crop of experimental artists from any (and every) musical genre. The festival has become more successful with every passing year, and ATP events have taken place in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia, with past curators including Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mike Patton, My Bloody Valentine, Portishead, Sonic Youth, Slint, and Tortoise.

For ten years ATP has set itself apart from other festivals by embracing seemingly disparate artistic genres, with events featuring art exhibitions, cinema programmes, spoken word performances and stand up comedy. It's been called 'Unforgettable' by Spin and 'the most enjoyable festival experience of our reporter's life' by Pitchfork. It has spawned an acclaimed concert series (Don't Look Back), a record label (ATP Recordings), and the release of a feature length documentary about the festivals from Warp X, titled All Tomorrow’s Parties, out on DVD in November 2009. Explanation of the world's most important 6-sec drum loop !!

"This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip."

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Announce New Album

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Announce Release of New Album....

I Learned the Hard Way Set To Drop On May 4, 2010....

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. On Jones’ birthday this year, the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn’s independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost singlehandedly stewarded today’s return of soul music to its more traditional sound.....

I Learned the Hard Way was produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest.........

....Discography:....

‘Dap-Dippin’ with the Dap-Kings’ - May 2002....
‘Naturally’ - January 2005....
‘100 Days, 100Nights’ - October 2007....

"In association with Resident Advisor. The Academy curates a special one-off night at The Royal Festival Hall bringing a host of pioneers from the worlds of Electronica. Avantgarde Music, Techno and Jazz.

Electronic music has always advanced like a force of nature – pushing itself to every corner of the earth, and assimilating practically every other genre of music into its electronic template. Since techno’s heady space-age birth in the American midwest to its countless modern-day incarnations, its appetite for progress is still insatiable. The Red Bull Music Academy's fascination with the genre’s future tangents is a dance that has lasted over a decade now. To further this investigation, the Academy takes over the Royal Festival Hall on February 12, with four collaborative acts who’re currently at the forefront of exploring the grey areas of experimental electronics, jazz, laptop soul, and avantgarde music – each one renowned for flipping the formula and getting creative with their own methodologies. Like the contents of an entire weekend festival condensed into one very special evening of music.

Bugge Wesseltoft & Henrik Schwarz
It's easier to navigate your way through the black forest than Henrik Schwarz' deep, swirling house tracks, as the German DJ and producer coaxes the emotion out of the machines alongside Norwegian jazz explorer and intrepid keysman Bugge Wesseltoft. This duo fire spur-of-the-moment sparks back and forth in this live collaboration, which first debuted in 2009 at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Carl Craig, Francisco Tristano & Moritz von Oswald
Another collaboration that updates and invigorates tradition is the trio of Detroit’s Grammy-awarded remix maverick Carl Craig, Berlin-based dubtechno demigod Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound), and club music’s piano prodigy of choice Francesco Tristano. Taking the hair-raising drama of the chamber orchestra and filtering it through dubby mechanised techno, this is the first time that these consummate voyagers of the four-four pulse will be performing their futuristic symphony together. Not to be missed!

Matmos
Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt are a pair of musicians that effortlessly manage to combine style, substance, and concept with every album they make. On planet Matmos, musique concrete pioneer Pierre Boulez could jam with Arkestra free sax legend Marshall Allen, while Icelandic siren of the strange Bjork narrates passages from Burroughs over the sound of clattering crustaceans. Rising to infamy after their surgical-operation-sampling LP A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure, the American duo went on to work with Björk on two albums and world tours, while also releasing LPs on Matador that stretch the boundaries of an already rubbery genre.

Terre Thaemlitz as DJ Sprinkles
Finally keeping things outside the box will be Comatonse's ambassador of sound and scale, Terre Thaemlitz, on the Ballroom floor. Exploring gender, sexuality, queer culture, class and race – identity politics, if you will – and most recently, on the acclaimed Midtown 120 Blues for Mule, taking a wry look at house music itself, (s)he challenges listeners every bit as much as entertains them – a pretty neat trick if you can pull it off. ‘A kidder with a serious cause,’ says XLR8R, which is pretty much on the money, honey.

Also playing will be a selection of the Red Bull Music Academy's participants, handpicked from around the world and re-working today’s sound formulas into distinct new signatures of their own". (RBMA WEBSITE)

FACT mix 66 is by Sbtrkt, a masked London-based producer who's impressed us this year with his remixes of Goldie, Peaches et al, and his original material - much of which has already been snapped up by labels like XL, Brainmath and Planet Mu.

Sbtrkt - FACT Mix 66 by sbtrkt

He played a stonking set at our last Lock Tavern party alongside Ben UFO and Cooly G - one that blended house-fed dubstep from Ramadanman et al with the neo-garage of folk like Falty DL and a healthy amount of bootlegs and unashamed house anthems - and Sinden recently gave him his Fabric debut as part of his Get Familiar night. His FACT mix was done of Ableton with plenty of live editing and effects, and features Karizma, F, 2000 & One, Goldie, Little Dragon and more. (FACT Magazine)
