A Return From my Hiatus

It's been quite a while since my last post - due to unplanned opertion to my back... all good now and what better way to return than with a masterful mix by Objekt.

"FACTs 300th mix comes from almost certainly our dance music newcomer of 2011, Berlin’s Objekt.

Objekt hasn’t released much in 2011, but that’s one of the reasons his emergence has been so welcome. In an age of oversaturation and overexposure, where people feel the need to upload their entire life stories to Soundcloud after two weeks of watching Logic tutorials, he’s the definition of someone who’s taken time to hone a craft (he’s actually worked as a programmer at Native Instruments for several years, which goes some way to explaining why his music is so sonically potent), and waited until they’re 100% ready before exposing their wares to the world at large.

And what an impact Objekt’s music has made. His first self-released single, ‘Tinderbox’ / ‘The Goose That Got Away’, was such an impressive amalgamation of half-step atmospherics and rickety techno drum programming that people were convinced it was the work of a more established producer under a new alias, while its follow up paired one of the year’s most stratospheric techno tracks (‘CLK Recovery’) with a B-side that proved that club-stopping dubstep drops don’t have to be stupid in 2011 (‘Unglued’). Combined with remixes for Call Super, Sbtrkt and Radiohead, and ‘Cactus’, a deadly dubplate that proved a highlight of Ben UFO’s recent mix CD for Rinse, he’s built up a small but powerful discovery with hints of STL, Mala, Peverelist and more to it already.

Objekt’s FACT mix is roughly in line with the music he’s released so far: underground techno full of staggered drums and inventive sampling, presented impeccably while never sounding too straight, smooth or unnatural. No tracklist provided, but there appears to be at least one unreleased Objekt cut in there for the spotters".

This Friday’s FACT mix comes from one of the brightest talents in UK house music, East London’s Ossie.

If you’ve listened to underground house favourite DJ Petchy at any point in the last eighteen months, there’s a good chance you’ll have heard Ossie’s ‘Tarantula’. A beauty of a track, built on gloriously natural percussion and slide rule synths, with the support of Petchy and others it became an anthem on Live FM and other London pirates, before being snapped up for full release by Lightworks, a new label formed by Reecha (Dirty Canvas/No Hats No Hoods) and Jon Rust.

This month, Ossie followed it up with arguably an even better second single, the vocoder-led ‘Set the Tone’ on Hyperdub. He also played a show-stopping closing set at our recent party at Cable; time, thought we, to ask him for a mix.

What’s key with Ossie’s productions is that instinctive, live sounding percussion he uses, and his love for natural drums also comes through in his FACT mix. Blended to perfection, they melt and slip into each other like butter. Download the mix below, and check page two for a short Q&A with Ossie.

"Gil Scott-Heron, who died on May 27 aged 62, was a composer, musician, poet and author whose writings and recordings provided a vivid, and often stinging, commentary on social injustice and the black American experience; his declamatory singing style, allied to the overtly political content of his work, made him widely recognised as one of the inspirational figures of rap music." "Scott-Heron first came to attention with his 1970 recording The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, an attack on the mindless and anaesthetising effects of the mass media and a call to arms to the black community: “You will not be able to stay home, brother./You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out./You will not be able to lose yourself on skag and skip,/Skip out for beer during commercials,/Because the revolution will not be televised.”

Written when Scott Heron was just 18, it first appeared in the form of a spoken-word recitation, his impassioned incantation accompanied only by congas and bongo drums, on his debut album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox.

The following year Scott-Heron recorded the song for a second time, this time with a full band, for his album Pieces of a Man, and as the B-side to the single Home Is Where The Hatred Is.

The song went on to be covered, sampled and referenced in innumerable recordings, the title entering the lexicon of contemporary phraseology. In 2010 it was named as one of the top 20 political songs by the New Statesman.

Scott-Heron’s music reflected something of the militancy and self-assertiveness of such theorists and polemicists as Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael. Over the course of some 20 albums he produced a series of sardonic and biting commentaries on ghetto life and racial injustice, including Whitey’s On The Moon, Home Is Where The Hatred Is, The Bottle (a lamentation about people squandering their lives on liquor, set to an irresistibly seductive Latin beat) and the anti-apartheid anthem Johannesburg. But anger was only colour in Scott-Heron’s music palette; songs such as Must Be Something and It’s Your World were moving affirmations of faith in the power of the human spirit.

A tall, rail-thin man with a wispy goatee beard and a countenance of prophetic gravity, Scott-Heron sang in a rough, declamatory voice that was once described as a mixture of “mahogany, sunshine and tears” and that always emphasised lyrical content over technique. The bass player Ron Carter, who played on Scott-Heron’s second album, Pieces of a Man, described it as “a voice like you would have for Shakespeare”.

His vocal style, and his political message, would be a major influence on such groups as Public Enemy and NWA, and would lead to his being described as “the godfather of rap”. It was a title that Scott-Heron himself always deplored: his music covered a far broader and more sophisticated emotional range than the crude rhetoric of so much rap music, which he dismissed on the ground that “you don’t really see inside the person. Instead, you just get a lot of posturing.” He preferred to describe himself as “a bluesologist”.

Gil Scott-Heron was born in Chicago on April 1 1949. He was named after his father, Gilbert Heron, a Jamaican who had settled in America, where his prowess at football (soccer) brought him to the attention of talent scouts from Scotland; in the early 1950s Gilbert snr played football professionally for Celtic and Third Lanark, earning the nickname “the Black Arrow”, before returning to Chicago. It was there that he met Gil’s mother, Bobbie, a librarian and an accomplished singer who had once performed with the New York Oratorial Society.

Scott-Heron would encapsulate his early years in a poem, Coming From A Broken Home: “Womenfolk raised me and I was full grown/before I knew I came from a broken home.” His parents separated when he was two, and he was sent to live with his maternal grandmother, Lillie Scott, in Jackson, Tennessee. Scott-Heron would credit his grandmother with being one of the primary influences on his life: “[She] raised me to not sit around and wait for people to guess what’s on your mind — I was gonna have to say it.”

Cultivating his interest in music and literature, she bought him a second-hand piano from a local funeral parlour and introduced him to the writings of the Harlem Renaissance novelist and poet Langston Hughes, who utilised the rhythms of jazz in his poetry and who became a major influence.

When Gil was 12 his grandmother died, and he moved to New York to be reunited with his mother, who brought up her son on her own. On the recommendation of his high school English teacher, Gil won a scholarship to a private school, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, before going on to study at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where Langston Hughes had once been a student.

In his second year at university he was given leave of absence to write a novel, The Vulture (1970), a thriller about ghetto life, while working as a clerk at a dry cleaners. On graduation he published a second novel, The Nigger Factory (1971), about campus unrest, and a collection of poetry, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox.

By now Scott-Heron had begun performing his poetry in coffee houses and jazz clubs, where he was approached by the jazz producer Bob Thiele who, as head of the Impulse label, had recorded such artists as John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as being the co-writer, with George David Weiss, of Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World.

Thiele signed Scott-Heron to his own Flying Dutchman label, and released Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, a live recording of one of Scott-Heron’s club performances. The follow-up Pieces of Man brought him together on record for the first time with Brian Jackson, a keyboard-player, flautist and composer whom he had met at Lincoln University, and who would become his principal collaborator on nine albums.

With Jackson, Scott-Heron refined an intoxicating hybrid of jazz, Latin and Afro idioms that established him in the vanguard of black American music in the 1970s. The success of a single version of The Bottle in 1974 led to his being signed to a major label, Arista. He enjoyed further chart success in 1976 with Johannesburg and, in 1978, with the anti-drug song Angel Dust: “Please, children would you listen, Just ain’t where it’s at. You won’t remember what you’re missin’, but down some dead end streets, there ain’t no turnin’ back.”

These lyrics were to prove ironic, for by the end of the 1980s Scott-Heron was himself beginning to be undermined by drugs use. Between 1970 and 1982 he made 13 albums, but it would be a further 11 years before the release of his 14th, Spirits; the album’s centrepiece was a gruelling three-part explication of the hells of drug addiction, The Other Side. While he continued to perform intermittently, Scott-Heron became a notoriously unreliable figure.

Monique de Latour, a New Zealander photographer who met Scott-Heron in 1995 and lived with him for several years, described how he would frequently vanish for days on end without explanation, often retreating to one of a number of flophouse hotels in Harlem.

In the hope of shocking Scott-Heron out of his addiction, de Latour took to photographing him when he was comatose on drugs and hanging the pictures on the walls; but he refused to look at them. “He didn’t like to look at himself at all,” she recalled. “He didn’t like to look in the mirror.”

In 2000 Scott-Heron was sentenced to 18 to 24 months of in-patient rehabilitation for possession of cocaine and two crack pipes, but given leave to complete a European tour. After failing even to turn up at a subsequent court hearing he was sentenced to between one and three years in prison. Released on parole, in 2003 he was again charged with possession of a controlled substance after cocaine he had hidden in the lining of his bag showed up on an airport x-ray. And in 2006 he was sentenced to two to four years in a New York State prison for violating a plea deal on a drug possession charge by leaving a rehabilitation centre.

In 2010 there was a resurgence of interest in his work when he returned with his first studio album in 16 years, I’m New Here. The record had come about after an English fan and record producer, Richard Russell, had written to Scott-Heron and then visited him in prison on Rikers Island in 2006.

The record put Scott-Heron into an abrasively contemporary musical setting, placing his gruff, time-worn spoken-word recitations — including a reworking of the Robert Johnson blues Me and the Devil — in a setting of dark, down-tempo beats, loops and samples.".

In a career spanning over two decades, Kirk Degiorgio has earned the tag of 'the producers producer'. From his humble beginnings in 1983 as an electro DJ to his As One productions for Clear, Mo' Wax and Ubiquity, Degiorgio has remained true to his love of everything soulful, edgy and funky. Inspired by a vinyl buying visit to Chicago and Detroit in 1990 Kirk sold all his records and put together ART Studios in the model of those he saw at Transmat and Metroplex. Kirk fused his vision of the Detroit sound with funk and jazz influences resulting in a succession of projects under the names Future/Past, As One, Offworld, Esoterik, Elegy and Super-A-Loof - only recently has he used his actual name for his purist techno releases on the New Religion label. He has remixed artists as varied as Azymuth, Coldcut, 4 Hero, Innerzone Orchestra, Papo Vasquez and many more. His collaborations include work with visionaries like Ian O'Brien, Tony Allen, Carl Craig, and Paul Randolph. From 1992 until 1997 Kirk's ART/OpArt labels released important early productions from B12, Carl Craig, Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, Photek and others. Kirk has also recorded several albums as As One, as well as working as producer, writer, and backing singer for the band The Beauty Room.

New Podcast by Mala (DMZ) for XLR8R.........Number 200

The second half of XLR8R's two-part 200th podcast comes courtesy of another musical heavyweight, dubstep kingpin Mala (a.k.a. Mark Lawrence).

Whether operating solo or as one half of legendary outfit Digital Mystikz, the man helped put dubstep on the musical map in the mid-'00s, not only as a producer and DJ, but also as the co-founder of the genre-defining DMZ label and club night with Coki and Loefah. Along the way, he also found the time to start up his own Deep Medi imprint. His work has undeniably influenced an entire generation of bass-loving artists, including a large swath of those folks who regularly appear in XLR8R. These days, when he's not travelling the globe and reminding people of the power of sub-bass, he's still turning out new music—most recently last year's Return II Space album—and now he's kicking off a new mix series, Sound*System*Musik, the first chapter of which is this podcast for XLR8R. Over the course of its 45 minutes, Mala drops one low-slung, speaker-rattling tune after the next, many of them DMZ dubplates, and almost all of which seriously emphasize the dub end of the dubstep equation. He's a true master craftsman, someone who manipulates and massages low-end sonics with the precision of a surgeon, making his contribution to the XLR8R podcast series to true pleasure to behold.

FACT mix 250: 2 Bad Mice (Bring back the Oldschool)

Apologies for not posting recently - have been distraceted by life outside the blogsphere...anyway i'm back with a FACT mix recently posted....its Oldschool/Jungle group 2 Bad Mice...... killer.

FACT mix 250 is a time machine. It’s destination? 1991, ’92, ’93, ’94.

This time machine has been built for us by 2 Bad Mice, the original nutters whose early productions – produced in collaboration with Rob Playford – constitute some of early rave’s finest musical moments, and midwifed jungle into life.

Founded in 1991 by Sean O’Keefe and Simon Colebooke, and, in a brilliant contraction of distant points on the map of English culture – dirty raves and bucolic children’s literature – they took their name (and that of their signature, breakthrough track) from Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Two Bad Mice, about two good-f0r-nowt rodents who vandalise a little girl’s dollhouse. The moniker, with its connotations of mischief, mayhem and bare-faced cheek, was perfect for O’Keefe and Colebrooke’s concoctions of shifty breakbeats, impish vocal loops and earth-quaking sub-bass.

“To be honest, I wasn’t sure about the use of [the name] as I thought it slightly cheesy,” Colebrooke would later recall. “But the anticipation of what could happen with the release made us so excited that it was soon forgotten. Sean knocked up the collage style cover, a test press and promo run were done and we were ready to unleash our first release…”

Key to the power of 2 Bad Mice’s beats was their then third member and producer Rob Playford, in whose poky studio their tracks were laid down in a haze of spliff-smoke. By the time he went on to engineer Goldie’s Timeless, Playford was happily describing drum ‘n bass as the next prog-rock and privileging the album format as the genre’s optimum vessel of expression, but for us the work of his that will truly endure is the more raw, impromptu and altogether less self-aware fare that he produced with 2 Bad Mice and their other collaborative project, Kaotic Chemistry. Taking their cue from souch trailblazers as Shut Up and Dance and Shades Of Rhythm, 2BM and KC brought a hip-hop approach to rave, sampling rhythms and chopping them up and sanding them down into devastatingly lean and mean dancefloor detonators – it’s telling that their most seminal anthem was titled ‘Bombscare’. At times you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, but the fact is that 2 Bad Mice, unlike so many of their peers, resisted the toytown cartoonishness that’s often part and parcel of ‘ardkore, while also remembereing to make their music fun – just listen to the rollercoasting keyboard vamps, chipmunked soul vocals and parping horns on ‘Hold It Down’. There’s obviously and innocence and naivety to their productions, and that’s part of its charm; at the same time, have you ever heard as deliciously dark-hearted and minimal as ‘Waremouse’?

In parallel to their work as 2 Bad Mice, O’Keeffe, Colebrooke and Playford were making music as Kaotic Chemistry, whose choice of titles and imagery made no secret of rave’s narcotic drive. The front cover image of the Five In One Night EP (which features the classic ‘Drumtrip’) depicted a typical coffee table scene, a hand at the edge of the shot holding a fag and chopping out a line of speed, discarded wrap just out of focus; the photo on the back showed the same table adorned with a pile of pills. If at this stage you were still doubting the inspiration behind the record, the whispered intonation ‘Ecstasy…Ecstasy…Ecstasy…’ that kicks off the title track soon dispelled it. The follow-up LSD EP (Moving Shadow, 1992) tightened up chaotic Kaotic Chemistry sound; the breaks are at once more polished and more punishing, the vocal loops are less comical and more genuinely disorienting, the overall production and manipulation of space terrifically advanced, not just on past 2BM/KC product, but compared to anything being made at the time. ‘Illegal Subs’, ‘Drum Trip II’, ‘Space Cakes’, ‘LSD’ – every track on this EP is exemplary, mingling mirth and menace as only early UK rave can. It really is one of the most essential 12″s of the era, and still sounds rabble-rousing today. All together now: “You are the people of chemistry / the people of physics / the people of civilisation / the people of music / the people of rhythm!”

After that spasm of future-rushing activity across ’91-’94, 2 Bad Mice went quiet, O’Keeffe and Colebrooke choosing to concentrate on other projects and, you know, life. O’Keeffe in particular has produced some extraordinary solo work, especially under his Deep Blue guise, beginning with 1993′s classic ‘The Helicopter Tune’ and continuing right up to the mid-noughties. Having sold in excess of 120,000 records on labels like Moving Shadow, 31 and Good Looking, these days his primary interest “techy, tribal and DEEP house”. But 2 Bad Mice are not dead, oh no.

For the past half-decade or so O’Keeffe and Colebrooke have been treating a new generation of ravers to the initimable 2BM sound. Joined by their old mucker Rhodesy, who remixed ‘Bombscare’ with Rob Haigh in ’94 and worked for Parliament Records and Kiss FM in subsequent years, for their modern-day sets 2BM stay true to their ’91-’94 sound; their sets are a living testament to the potency of the hardcore sound, which despite having created or mutated into myriad different strains of different dance music since, remains unbeaten in its ability to make euphoria and dystopia feel like natural bedfellows.

2 Bad Mice play the resurgent Glade Festival on June 10. Other acts on the whopping bill include Photek, Untold, Hyetal, Machinedrum, Ben UFO, Object and Pangaea. It’s worth noting that none – repeat, none – of these artists would exist in the form that they do without 2 Bad Mice, so whether your a craggy old-skool survivor or a fresh-faced rave debutante, be sure to go pay your respects and experience the party of your life while you’re at it. And so….here we have 2 Bad Mice’s FACT mix. It’s out 250th episode, something of a landmark, and we’re delighted to have Sean, Si and Rhodesy behind the decks for the occasion. Mixed with deadly precision, it’s essentially a greatest hits of hardcore and early jungle, all killer and no filler. With the possible exception of last week’s Machinedrum workout, we’re hard-pressed to think of a 2011 FACT mix this year that we’ve enjoyed quite this much. The Stepkids - New 3 peice outfit from Conneticut

The Stepkids are three singer/songwriters. “A lot of what excites us about this band is this band itself,” says bassist and keyboardist Dan Edinberg. “It’s not either of us; it’s about creating an entity where the entity itself is what’s important.” As a result, every song on the Stepkids self-titled debut album is written with equal input from each member.

“All three of us write and all three of us sing,” says Jeff Gitelman, who resigned from touring as Alicia Keys' guitarist to concentrate full-time on recording the Stepkids self-titled debut album. Drummer Tim Walsh continues, “There's an equal split in the creative process. Any lyric, any melody, any idea could have been done by any of us.”

This approach comes from more than a decade of musical experimentation and experience. Raised on the East Coast jazz and R&B circuit, individual band members went on to share stages with 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill, tour internationally with indie punk band Zox, score movies and commercials and produce solo albums.

The Stepkids groove is a fusion of punk and jazz, West African and 1960s folk, neo and classic soul, classic funk and 20th century classical. The band produce, engineer and record themselves on a reel-to-reel.

There’s no singular icon, no singular sound, and no singular way of making it happen for the Stepkids. It’s psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole

FACT MAGAZINE have posted an 'Influences' Mix by the Legend that is Photek

For their 226th podcast, FACT are incredibly proud to present a mix by legendary jungle and house producer, Rupert ‘Photek’ Parkes.

Renowned for his impeccable drum programming, Photek had already been releasing singles for several years when, in 1997, he released Modus Operandi, his legendary first album and a record remarkable as much for its atmosphere, restraint and measured, ice-tipped grooves as its potential to send dancefloors wild.

Having established himself as one of the kings of the jungle (ahem), Parkes would go on to experiment with house music (most notably on 2001 single ‘Mine to Give’, featuring Robert Owens), as well as soundtrack work, and collaborations with artists as disparate as Goldie and Nine Inch Nails.

2011 has seen Photek back with a vengeance that fans haven’t seen in years, releasing a new EP this month, Avalanche, and working on remixes for Daft Punk and Ray LaMontagne as well commissioning mixes of his own material by Boddika, Breach and Addison Groove. According to his people, there’s more new Photek material to come, and so what better time for a FACT mix than now. Billed as an “influences mix” by Parke, it’s an expert selection of bleep techno, classic house, hip-hop and more, with highlights coming from LFO, Mr. Fingers and The Soulsonic Force. SWAMP81 To Release Sicko Cell and further releases.....

Having caused a storm on the forums since late last autumn, the anonymously titled UK bass anthem-in-the-making ‘Sicko Cell’ will see a release soon on Loefah‘s hugely on form Swamp81 imprint (via FACT).

Having been caned by the likes of Oneman, Loefah, Bok Bok, Jackmaster et al, the origin of the track is still under wraps (though current favourites seem to be either Steve Oneman or Loe himself). ‘Sicko Cell’s “I’m the information / cocaine powder” refrain and 808 bass has caused devastation on dancefloors throughout the capital, with a photo posted on Swamp81′s tumblr account confirming it will be Loefah’s label releasing the track as Swamp014.

The keen-eyed amongst you will also notice that 2 of the preceding releases will be a 12″ from New York’s FaltyDL, plus a double pack from Instra:mental’s Al Bleek in his Boddika guise, as Swamp010 and Swamp 011 respectively.....

FACT mix 218: Hercules & Love Affair

"We’ve been nagging Andy Butler to record a FACT mix ever since the release of his debut single as Hercules & Love Affair, ‘Classique #2′. Four years later, and the boy’s come good.

In fairness, it’s been a busy half-decade for the New York producer and DJ. Hercules & Love Affair’s debut album, released via DFA in 2008, saw he and his band rocketed into cult/pop stardom, and by God did they tour that album hard – in 2008-9 you couldn’t even go down the newsies for a packet of crisps without catching a H&LA live show en route.

Hercules & Love Affair’s new album, Blue Songs, is out this week on Moshi Moshi, and things have changed. Recorded with Patrick Pulsinger in Vienna, and to some extent eschewing the brassy disco tropes that defined the band’s debut, it finds Butler delving deeper than ever into his ’86-’94 house obsession – lead single ‘My House’ is a loving homage to Chicago and New York’s overlapping 4/4 golden eras, while ‘It’s Alright’ is a beatless cover of the Sterling Void jam – but also developing the range of his songwriting, even singing himself on the agreeably frail title track. This an album that expertly juggles ecstasy and heartbreak, the melancholic and the celebratory. With Nomi Ruiz and Antony Hegarty absent this time around, Butler and his trusty sidekick Kim Ann Foxman have recruited young pup vocalists Aerea Negrot and Shaun Wright, both of whom maintain the tears’n'mascara diva-ishness of their predecessors while bringing a palpable and infectious enthusiasm to proceedings.

So why is Butler so preoccupied with classic house? Even his recently minted record label, MR INTL., is dedicated to new productions hat evoke and allude to that bygone era.

There was an elegance, subtlety, a sophistication to that music,” he explains over the phone. “It was fine art. The depth and substance is unparalleled. I don’t think anything goes as deep as those early Murk records, for example. Nor do you get the opposite. The top side ‘I Come From Jamaica’ is a totally unique early exotic RnB jam, whilst ‘Country Girl Blues’, is a delicious RnB dancehall mover aimed at shakin’ hips & shufflin’ feet!

Bandleader Chris Powell was a relatively busy in Philly through the late 40s and 50s, cutting a raft of Jump sides and a number of crooning big-band ballads for the Columbia, Okeh and Grand labels.

Amidst his releases for Okeh lies this curious novelty - ‘I Come from Jamaica’, unlike anything else Powell recorded and similarly out of sorts with much of the contemporary R&B sounds of the day. From the off, as we hear odd percussive sound effects over an off kilter latin rhythm, it’s clear that we are in experimental territory. What follows is a sheer delight - an exotic, jazzy, Caribbean themed dancer which ALWAYS turns heads! "It was 1966 when lead singer Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops belted out the original version of Reach Out, I’ll be There, reaching No. 1 in the RnB charts in the process. And deservedly so, because this Motown gem is widely regarded as one of the best songs ever recorded. So much so that it’s attracted a variety of cover versions, including everything from disco (Gloria Gaynor) to punk (Snuff), from psych (Merrilee Rush) to new romantic (Human League). That’s all very well, but in my considered opinion the BEST cover version has to be that from little-known soul singer & guitarist Lee Moses.

The problem with a cover version arises from its contradictory nature. The song itself has already been created, so how to create something that’s the essentially the same, but different? And then how to make it distinctive, and better? One way is to choose a different style, such as the punk/disco/psych versions mentioned above. Back in 1967 Lee Moses did just that – and he chose RAW, HEAVY FUNK as his theme. And wow did he succeed! It’s easy to make a mess of a cover because comparisons are always going to be made with the ‘superior’ original. But I think it’s fair to say here that Moses blows the Four Tops into orbit. He rips the Beatles to shreds too, check Day Tripper on the flip for a mind-blowing example of how to put some passion and soul into what was essentially a plod-along pop song. If you want to hear how to do a cover version, take a lead from Lee Moses – put some fire, soul, heat n guts into it, and do it better!" (JAZZMAN RECORDS)

"Here we have another sought after funk 45 which gets a proper re-issue treatment. The Dynamic Corvettes recorded those two sides in 1971 for Rufus Mitchell's Ru-Jac Records label out of Baltimore, Maryland. Between 1963 and 1972 Mitchell put out more than 50(!) 45 r.p.m. singles on his label. Most artists recorded soul music, but some were jazz musicians or hybrids of the two. An interesting side note is that a young Joe Quarterman spent time writing for many Ru-Jac artists in the 1960s." (Sounds Of The Universe)

To read Lois Black's lyric 'My hot pants are just a part of me' on paper suggests a cash-in novelty tune of the era, but contrasted with the stark and relentless funk of the backing track it becomes absolutely transportational!

A nomadic group, spending most of the 70s playing one-nighters at military bases and residencies at ski lodges (!) with no real home-base - the band had previously been classed as impossible to locate. Funk DJs and collectors had been on their trail for over a decade when a chance phone call in 2009 found a member living in Atlanta. Which brings us to the legitimately licensed and uber-anticipated reissue of this genre-defining deep funk jewel, here at long last it's the Six Degree South!" (Fat City Records)

"ALMOST 20 years ago, Alex Paterson's The Orb were hailed as the new Pink Floyd and a music magazine managed to bring psychedelic-rock legend Dave Gilmour and the young pretender together for a front-cover feature.
It seemed like the obvious comparison. Both acts wanted to expand minds and explore space. Both favoured long pieces of music and lengthy song-titles - the Floyd with Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving WitADVERTISEMENT h A Pict and The Orb with A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld. And to add to Paterson's credentials as a watcher of the skies, his Kintyre-born father helped construct the Telstar satellite.

But the Orbman was nervous. "I remember we met in Notting Hill at what I think were Dave's offices - I was told he was obsessed with aeroplanes and there were propellers everywhere," says Paterson. "I thought being called the new Floyd would be bad for us. We'd already made two experimental albums; we'd invented this thing called ambient house. I thought that being associated with this guy from a different generation would hold us back. Dave, of course, was very gracious. He must have thought I was this snotty upstart, which I was, but he didn't let on. So it's pretty funny and pretty amazing that we've ended up making this record."

The collaboration, Metallic Spheres, involves two pieces of Orb noodling built round Gilmour's guitar, both lasting around 20 minutes, the length of one side of vinyl back in the day, and grew out of a charity event for Gary McKinnon, the Glasgow-born hacker fighting extradition to the US. Back in the day, the two would have shared the same studio. "This was more like file-sharing," says Paterson. The tracks began with Gilmour jamming with Paterson's regular collaborator Youth, then he took them away and manipulated them.

When Pink Floyd were in their prog-rock pomp and making giant inflatable pigs fly, 49-year-old Paterson was a punk. "I must have hated Pink Floyd back then," he says. "Like everyone else in that movement, I was blinkered in the belief they were old hippies and therefore had to die. God, I must have been insufferable, smashing things up for the hell of it. I'm only glad I didn't become a fully-fledged football hooligan."

But when he casts his mind further back, Paterson acknowledges that he loved the Floyd, that they soothed him through an often troubled adolescence. "My dad died when I was three and shortly after that I was ostracised by my mum. I got sent to this private boarding school, Kingham Hill, where Dark Side Of The Moon became this little soundtrack to my life and I had the pyramids poster you got free with the LP on my bedroom wall. I also loved the Floyd's Meddle album for the track Echoes, which lasted all of side two and sampled football chants.

"The school was an odd place. You were either a kid from a broken home or a vicar's son and it was real sink-or-swim stuff.

My best friends were Martin Glover, before he called himself Youth, and Guy Pratt, who would one day play bass with Pink Floyd. We were always crying out for the normal family life we thought everyone on the outside was enjoying. We dealt with the tADVERTISEMENTrauma of, aged 11, suddenly having to look after yourself, and we ended up swimming. And when we left we soon realised that 'normal' doesn't really exist."

Duncan Alexander Robert Paterson is proud of his Scottish roots. He's just as likely to call himself a European these days, although despite being London-born and a Chelsea fan, admits he couldn't bring himself to cheer for England at the World Cup. He's father to Mia Arizona, ten, and four-year-old Tiger Young (named after the 1950s calypso musician Young Tiger, not the golfer). Paterson's older brother Martin died in 2001 and is much missed.

"There were nine years between us and it's nine years since he passed away so I'm about to go to Bologna where he lived for a party with his Italian friends. Martin took me to my first gigs, for which I'll always be grateful. And he reminded me of two people: Tom Baker as Doctor Who and Dave Gilmour."

Paterson started out as a drum roadie, couldn't sing or play an instrument and is deaf in one ear so he can easily appreciate great musicianship like that of Gilmour. "His importance, and that of the Floyd, cannot be overstated. It's not about grandeur but the way they used music to evoke emotion, which is a special talent."

The Orb have been burbling away for two decades now, their blissed-out music often in stark contrast to rows, rapidly changing personnel and legal disputes over the sampled voices of Minnie Riperton and Rickie Lee Jones among others. Paterson, who played chess for the duration of their sole Top Of The Pops appearance, has been the one constant. He talks of eventually handing over The Orb to daughter Mia - "She sings our song Fluffy Clouds around the house" - but isn't retiring yet and indeed appears to have been re-energised by the hook-up with Gilmour.

"Jimmy Cauty, the original other member who left to concentrate on the KLF, has asked to come back to the fold and we're going to re-record what should have been our first album but never got released. I'm also doing an opera - the Royal Opera House has commissioned one from The Orb for 2012. And I'm going to be working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry who, like Dave, was an original hero of mine. One by one, I'm knocking them off."

What a shame, then, that Paterson and Gilmour didn't actually share a pot of tea or something stronger during the making of Metallic Spheres. "Youth cocked that up by not sending me a text saying Dave was in the studio. I was his prefect at school, you know, so there will be punishment." v

FACT mix 200 by Darkstar

"FACT’s mix series is 200 sessions old. To honour the occasion, we’ve got a mix from one of our favourite groups of recent times, Darkstar.

Darkstar started as the duo of James Young and Aiden Whalley, with a series of singles on their own 2010 label, as well as MG77 and Clandestine Cultivations. Within a year, they’d become a key part of Kode9’s Hyperdub roster, debuting for the label with the minor classic ‘Need You’/’Squeeze my Lime’. UK garage and synth-pop filtered through a chiptune lens with vocals sung by the world’s saddest robot, it expanded on the promise shown by early Darkstar cut ‘Out of Touch’, and showed glimpses of the mournful computer pop to come.

A year later, Darkstar released ‘Aidy’s Girl is a Computer’, fulfilling that promise and winning them fans beyond the FWD>> circuit they were primarily known in. A whole album of these frozen Mac laments looked set to follow (and would have, if album outtakes ‘Automating’ and the original version of ‘Gold’, found on this FACT mix, are anything to go by), but at some point between them and now, Darkstar scrapped that idea and became a three-piece, with comparatively clean vocals sung by new recruit James Buttery.

Last month, they released their debut album, North. You can read FACT’s review here; needless to say, we think it’s great. Darkstar’s FACT mix features the original version of North highlight ‘Gold’, as well as cuts from Games, Radiohead, Moodymann, New Order, Shed and more. In the words of the group’s James Young, ‘it’s a mixed selection, and I’ve tried to keep it in an arrangement that I myself would listen in personally. It’s typical of tunes I’d skip between before I record, and what we were listening to recording the album.” FACT MAGAZINE

Label of the month: Night Slugs

UK bass music is ever-changing, and Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990's new imprint is at the forefront of its most recent mutation.

You're no longer feeling your local music scene. Do you a) bitch about it, or b) do something about it? "We wanted to bring on a new era and that is what we were saying from the get go," says Alex Sushon, AKA Bok Bok, on the inception of the Night Slugs parties back in early 2008. Sushon and partner James Connolly, AKA L-Vis 1990, have since translated a sense of personal disquiet into one of London's freshest sounding parties and 2010's most celebrated labels.

The revolutionary aims Sushon refers to were, in his case, a reaction to the London grime scene. Having played, produced and partied to the music since discovering a DJ Slimzee mix in 2003, he had grown disenchanted with grime's apparent shift away from the dance floor. In terms of UK dance strands, he fell back on the nascent bassline scene but was simultaneously getting kicks from much further afield. "I was interested in grime from a socio-economic point of view and I started looking around the world to see if there was anything similar happening," he remembers. "I got into a lot of the US localised ghetto genres. I got really into the Baltimore club sound, the Chicago ghetto house sound and in Detroit, ghetto tech. I checked out what was going on in Africa and really got into the South African stuff."

L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok.Connolly's grounding, meanwhile, was as a promoter, DJ and producer in his hometown of Brighton. He co-ran drum & bass and breakstep night Fallout with locals Mumdance and High Rankin during his teens, then, after gradually losing interest in the genres, started the party that would prove pivotal. So Loud! became indicative of Connolly's more electro-fied tastes. He credits the booking of Drop the Lime (and the ensuing party) for setting him on the musical path he now finds himself—and for the inspiration behind his 2008 breakout track, "Change the Game." Its speed garage inflections and crafty US hip-hop samples caught the ear of the London-based Sushon, who contacted Connolly through MySpace. The pair began a dialogue based on uncannily similar tastes, while a still Brighton-based Connolly booked Sushon for a party he was throwing up in London.

"It took James to move to London for us to really get going," recalls Sushon on his partner's eventual relocation north, "but from an early point when we started to talk about music we said that the status quo in the clubs at that point was basically shit and we weren't feeling it." The first Night Slugs party was staged at the Redstar in south London's Camberwell, March 2008. (The venue now boasts a small chapter in bass music folklore having provided an early platform for artists such as Oneman, Ben UFO, Shackleton and Ramadanman.) The initial party was a smash success, followed by a dip in numbers at subsequent gigs as they experimented with bookings and found their feet. There was also a sense that people were unwilling to venture south of the river for a night out, and the event shifted to the more centrally located East Village.

The array of DJs booked for those early forays—Oneman, Zomby, Rekless, Lil Silva, Kode9, Jackmaster, Crazy Cousinz, DJ Zinc—cultivated a fertile patch of ambiguity surrounding the party; their "4x4/Heavy Bass/Gutter House" descriptor at the foot of flyers was similarly nebulous. Sushon and Connolly had come good on their freewheeling aims. And from the melting pot something new began to form. "After a while it just made a lot of sense," says Sushon. "What we found was that as DJs in our own right as well as [those playing at] the night, a certain sound was starting to come together around it. There was ourselves, and other people around us started to make tracks that just fit together and fit in our DJ sets."

The lesser known Girl Unit, Egyptrixx and Kingdom were at the core of this colourful collective—although their sound world continued to reside only within the confines of their club nights. "After a while we found that a lot of the tracks weren't getting a home and were just sitting around not getting released," explains Sushon. "In particular some of the early Kingdom stuff was a big motivation. James and I said to each other, 'Why is this stuff just sitting there? Why aren't labels picking this stuff up?' Six months might go past and the same tracks might still not be signed and it was quite frustrating so we thought, 'Why not just do it?'"

NS001 dropped in January 2010 and sent out a picture-perfect postcard of not only the Night Slugs parties, but the smorgasbord of London bass music. Square One also represented Mosca's debut release. In its digital form the EP collected eight tracks, including "Nike"—a ten-minute meander through boulevards of bleeps and broken beats—an uproarious remix of "Square One" from Bristol talent Julio Bashmore, and further re-rubs from Roska, Greena, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. The EP's artwork also couldn't fail to be noticed. Sushon has been behind all of Night Slugs' incandescent presentation (he has a professional background in design) and agrees that the sounds feed directly into the sights: "There is a lot of neon going on in the music in general I think especially with those really bright analogue synths. I am really obsessed with Tron and that kind of luminescence."

The world seemed ready and willing to embrace the Night Slugs label from the off. A certain youthful zest and fluorescent brilliance endeared UK sympathetic media outlets to their releases and cast a thematic shaft of light across their discography. It's best then to think in terms of colours when attempting to delineate the Night Slugs sound: how else to group the nocturnal juke of Girl Unit's "IRL," the 8-bit Funky of Lil Silva's Night Skanker EP, and the mutant R&B of Kingdom's That Mystic? Connolly is also swift to dismiss any suggested associations between UK Funky and the label. "I wouldn't want any genre name applied to the label at all," he says sharply. "UK funky is something totally different. It was Crazy Cousinz, Roska and all those dudes back then. I think that UK funky as a genre is pretty much obsolete now. I think it has turned into a big soup of different sounds."

Shadowing the imprint proper has been the Night Slugs white label series which began with a re-release of L-Vis 1990's Compass / Zahonda. "That was one for the heads really," comments Connolly on their pseudo sub-label. "Getting tracks out that we didn't want to put on the label to be a statement. It was more getting out tracks for the dance floor and bootlegs as well that we can't really put out for legal reasons." On that last point Jam City's "Ecstasy (Refix)" comes immediately to mind. Endgame's 1983-released "Ecstasy" was given a sub-bass makeover and has proved to be the imprint's most coveted 12-inch. A sense of anticipation had been built over Jam City's debut, but Sushon says that, generally speaking, they favour speed over secrecy: "I learnt lessons from dubstep where in the early-to-mid days of the scene people like DMZ would leave tracks floating around for a year before they would put them out and I saw people getting really frustrated at that. As much as I'm into the dubplate culture, I didn't want it to be an elitist thing that drives people mad."

"Brand" is a frowned upon term in certain music circles, although it would be fair to say that Night Slugs is pushing hard on multiple fronts. The pair toured the United States in late 2009—before the imprint was even formed—and the same can be said about their regular show on London's Rinse FM which began around the same time period. In terms of the label, their first compilation, Night Slugs Allstars Volume One, will drop in November and will be followed by albums from Jam City, Egyptrixx and L-Vis 1990. Connolly has recently spent time in New York feeling out the vibe of his classic house-indebted LP. "It's like Night Slugs but made in Chicago in 1988," he says, again illustrating his and the imprint's resolutely forward momentum.

Night Slugs is flourishing within in an unprecedented climate of creative endeavour that has recently gripped UK bass music; innovation is a word that both Sushon and Connolly use liberally. "That is something that we have always had to a greater or lesser extent and that's why our music scene is cool," concludes Sushon when asked why the UK scene is in the midst of such a purple patch. "There is constantly a side of our music scene that doesn't give a shit and is trying to do something new at the expense of any kind of a rule book. I think that's what the UK has that some places don't at the moment. Currently there are two things going on: Firstly, because of the internet and the fact that people have started to pay attention to the UK... it seems like there is a new thing when there might not necessarily be a new thing. Secondly, amongst us guys and maybe our peers, there is a reaction against the more formulaic genres that dominate most of the clubs around the Western world. Formulas are shit and we don't want them, so that's why we don't do them."

"Space Dimension Controller was born sometime in the 24th century. Lucky for us, then, that he traveled back in time, crashed his Electropod and has been stuck here for just long enough to release some of the finest and funkiest electro-tinged records of 2010. (That, or he's Jack Hamill, a young Belfast producer obsessed with hardware.) SDC's sound may be retro-tinged, but it has excited everyone from Kyle Hall (who remixed SDC on Clone's Royal Oak) to Josh Wink to the brains behind legendary techno label R&S. The latter will likely put out SDC's debut full-length next year. To tide us over, SDC has found time in between repairs on his Electropod, filling in for Tensnake at our ADE party this year when the Hamburg producer found himself with wisdom tooth troubles and otherwise touring around the world on old-fashioned airplanes to put together a mix that stitches together his own tracks with a healthy dose of (mostly) old school treats.

What have you been up to recently?

Since narrowly avoiding death by sending myself back in time to the year 2010, I've just been enjoying myself on Planet Earth. Of course, I need to get back to my own time, but unfortunately my Electropod was damaged when I crash landed on Earth. I'm trying to fix it, but there are so many distractions here... So many synthesizers and other hardware that I could never obtain in the future are easily accessible and, with all this access to amazing equipment, I just finished my debut EP for the label R&S.

"The ‘Temporary Thrillz’ doublepack vinyl release sees Jack advancing his signature sound over this maxi EP format, that also includes 4 locked grooves and comes in a limited first run on purple splattered vinyl! People have difficulty pinning down the SDC sound, I’ve seen it described as electro, space funk, cosmic disco, pop-psychedelic, techno-funk, jazz fusion, disco house and electronica.

Along with the EP, I've also just done a remix of Model 500 for R&S and a remix of Anthony Shakir for Rush Hour. The annoying thing is that I had already been in contact with R&S from the future and had a whole album's worth of music aboard my main vessel, but that will have to stay there until I fix my time travel device and I can send it back to them for Earth to enjoy.

How and where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded aboard my Electropod which is docked in my secret base in an uncharted area of the Atlantic Ocean. I used my laptop, various machines and hardware effects plus a few old mixers to give it a real gritty feel.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your idea behind the mix?

I didn't want it to be just another laptop mix, so I kind of treated it like I treat my own tracks when was making it. I like scrutinising tiny details and starting to loop tracks out of nowhere, then bringing in a drum machine or two or filter a tiny bit here and there. I don't like things being repetitive for too long, which could be seen as a bad thing if you're playing a set in a club, but I don't really care. I'd rather do what feels right in my head even if it means the dance floor gets angry because I cut out of a track before it even gets to the peak time full support bangerschnerden bit.

What are you up to next?

Depending on how long I'm back in your time, I might end up making another single for R&S before I fix my time travel device. Once I'm back in the year 2352, I'll make sure to send my album back in time for R&S to release it to the world. Those guys at R&S really are the best and they know exactly what's going down. They have made my stay here on this primitive, yet funky planet so much easier. I'm a complicated man, but no one understands me like my synthesizers". Resident Advisor

SAD NEWS: Panasonic discontinues Technics analog turntables

TOKYO (TR) – Fans of analog music were dealt another blow when consumer electronics company Panasonic announced earlier this month that it would be discontinuing the audio products within its Technics brand, most notably the legendary line of analog turntables.

On October 20, the company said that it was winding down production of the Technics SL-1200MK6 analog turntable, the SH-EX1200 analog audio mixer and the RP-DH1200 and RP-DJ1200 stereo headphones due to challenges in the marketplace.

“Panasonic decided to end production mainly due to a decline in demand for these analog products and also the growing difficulty of procuring key analog components necessary to sustain production,” the company said in statement issued to The Tokyo Reporter.

Last year, Japan’s last remaining vinyl pressing plant, owned by the production company Toyo Kasei, produced around 400,000 discs from its multifloor factory in Yokohama’s Tsurumi Ward, a far cry from the industry’s peak of 70 million four decades ago.

Panasonic said that sales of analog decks today represent roughly 5 percent of the figure from ten years ago. At present the company has no plans for putting analog turntables back on the market.

The SL-1200 series turntable, which enjoys a massive following in the DJ community, had been in continuous production since 1972. Since then 3.5 million units have been produced, making the brand’s purple and gray logo (“Technics” written twice) an icon in clubs.

The turntables are acclaimed for their quick start-up and reliability, achieved through its durable Direct Drive turning mechanism (via magnets, as opposed to being belt-driven) and its heavy 12.5-kilogram base (composed of what is known as the Technics Non Resonance Compound), which isolated the platter so as to reduce feedback and the chance that the cartridge would jump.

Japan’s DJ community was abuzz, notably on the social-networking site Twitter, following the announcement. Tatsuo Sunaga (dubbed “The Record Chief”) said in an email that the announcement was unfortunate.

“I’ve been using these products for around 20 years and rarely suffered a breakdown,” explained Sunaga, who is a club DJ, spinning jazz up and down Japan, and the author of “I’ll Take That Record!” — a chronicle of a three-year vinyl-buying spree. “This type of excellence is something not seen globally, and I think the fact that one doesn’t need to purchase subsequent models as being the reason for forcing the move.”

But even if turntable manufacturers targeting top DJs continue to shrink their output, Sunaga sees those who prefer analog today as being too obsessed with the format to allow it to become extinct. “I don’t think analog users will lose interest,” he said.

Regarding the Technics brand itself, nothing has been decided other than the discontinuation of the mentioned products, the statement said".

The three members of Run–D.M.C. grew up in the neighborhood of Hollis in the Queens borough of New York City, USA.[3] As a teen, Simmons was recruited into hip-hop by his older brother, Russell, who was then an up and coming hip-hop promoter. Simmons appeared onstage as a DJ for rapper Kurtis Blow, who was managed by Russell. Performing as "DJ Run, Son of Kurtis Blow," the younger Simmons soon began trading rhymes with Kurtis Blow and beat-boxing for the audience.[6] He would often come back to Hollis and play his taped performances for his friend Darryl McDaniels. Previously, McDaniels had been more focused on athletics than music, but soon began to DJ after purchasing a set of turntables. Simmons convinced McDaniels to start rapping, and though McDaniels wouldn't perform in public, he soon began writing cool and fantastic rhymes and calling himself "Easy D."

Simmons and McDaniels (who, over time, had overcome his early stage fright) started hanging around Two-Fifths Park in Hollis in late 1980, hoping to rap for the local DJs that performed and competed there, and the most popular one known to frequent the park was Mizell, then known as "Jazzy Jase". Mizell was known for his flashy wardrobe and b-boy attitude, which led to minor legal troubles as a teen. Thereafter, he decided to pursue music full-time and began entertaining in the park soon after. Eventually, Simmons and McDaniels rapped in front of Mizell at the park, and the three became friends immediately. Following Russell's success managing Kurtis Blow, he helped Run record his first single, a song called "Street Kid." The song went unnoticed, but despite the single's failure, Run's enthusiasm for hip-hop was growing. Simmons soon wanted to record again—-this time with McDaniels, but Russell refused, citing a dislike for D's rhyming style.[6] After they completed high school and started college in 1982, Simmons and McDaniels finally convinced Russell to let them record as a duo, and they recruited Mizell (who now called himself Jam-Master Jay) to be their official DJ. A year later, in 1983, Russell agreed to help them record a new single and land a record deal, but only after he changed McDaniels' stage name to 'DMC' and marketed the group as "Run–D.M.C.", a name which, incidentally, that the group hated at first. DMC said later, “We wanted to be the Dynamic Two, the Treacherous Two — when we heard that shit, we was like, ‘We’re gonna be ruined!’ ”[7]

After signing with Profile Records, Run–D.M.C. released their first single "It's Like That/Sucker MCs", in late 1983. The sound was a revolution in hip hop: aggressive, cocky rhymes over spare, minimal, hard-hitting beats. Previously, rap music had been chiefly funk and disco-influenced, but Run–D.M.C.'s sound, like their name, was unlike anything that had been heard in rap before. The single was well received, peaking at #15 on the R&B charts.[8] The trio performed the single on the New York Hot Tracks video show in 1983. Emboldened by their success, Run–D.M.C. recorded their eponymous debut and, released in 1984, Run–D.M.C. was an instant hit and, arguably, rap's first classic album.[citation needed] Hit singles such as "Jam-Master Jay" and "Hard Times" proved that the group were more than a one-hit wonder, and the landmark single "Rock Box" was a groundbreaking fusion of raw hip-hop and hard rock that would become a cornerstone of the group's sound and paved the way for the rap rock movement of the late 1990s.

Run–D.M.C.'s swift ascension to the forefront of rap with a new sound and style meant that old school hip hop artists were becoming outdated. Along with pushing rap into a new direction musically, Run–D.M.C. changed the entire aesthetic of hip hop music and culture. Old school rappers like Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five tended to dress in the flashy attire that was commonly attributed to rock and disco acts of the era: tight leather, chest-baring shirts, gloves and hats with rhinestones and spikes, leather boots, etc. Run–D.M.C. discarded the more glam aspects of early hip hop's look (which ironically, was later readopted in 1990 by more "pop" rappers MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice) and incorporated a more 'street' sense of style such as fedoras, leather jackets, and unlaced Adidas shoes.[1] The group's look had been heavily influenced by Mizell's own personal style. When Russell Simmons saw Jay's flashy, yet street b-boy style, he insisted the entire group follow suit.[9] Run said later:

“ There were guys that wore hats like those and sneakers with no shoestrings. It was a very street thing to wear, extremely rough. They couldn’t wear shoelaces in jail and we took it as a fashion statement. The reason they couldn’t have shoelaces in jail was because they might hang themselves. That’s why DMC says ‘My Adidas only bring good news and they are not used as felon shoes.'[10] ”

Madlib Medicine Show #10: Black Soul

"Titling an album Black Soul is a risky move. Soul can mean anything, depending on who you’re talking to. And Black Soul – the name that adorned countless compilations the world over in the early 1970s – is generally used to refer to that specific breed of soul music that came to the fore when James Brown rocked a pompadour, and Aretha Franklin’s weight was southward of 160 pounds. But leave it to Madlib to use the term Black Soul to refer to a dynamic point in the Black American musical experience – the mid to late 70s, when soul was giving way to disco, when the groove was on it’s way to the boogie, when funk was on it’s way to fonk. This is a mix that, like the previous entries in the Madlib Medicine Show skirts convention while testing its listener’s music acumen.

Billy Byrd - Lost in the Crowd (Soul7.018)

Big Tune!!! Top drawer modern soul with an irresistible thumpin' beat that’s RARE RARE RARE, now out on our SOUL7 label for all to hear! Another quality double sider and with Billy Byrd’s throaty vocals appearing on two class songs. Produced by Georgia native Calvin Arnold, known for his funk output, perhaps it was his influence that gave this record such a solid, intense rhythm? Yes it’s the beat that really counts, few records of this nature have such an incessant, heavy groove that has so much appeal to the dance floor. Back in the ‘70s when it was first released the record went nowhere, and it’s remained extremely scarce ever since. Why such low sales? Was ‘Lost on the Crowd’ ahead of its time? We certainly think so, and NOW is the time to put that right! (Jazzman)

Nappy Brown - Coal Miner (alternate version) b/w Coal Miner (original version) (JAZZMAN JBJ.009)

Originally issued in 1961 on Savoy Records and at the dwindling tail end of Nappy Brown’s initial R&B career, Coal Miner was a huge record which belonged, sound-wise at least, to his peak, some years prior. With its honking sax and sleazy Fever-esque bass line, the song probably arrived a little too late in the day to seriously trouble the charts at the time but nowadays it sounds perfect for the R&B set and is Nappy’s signature record on the Mod and Popcorn scenes, and beyond.

A few years ago, a previously unheard take of Coal Miner was uncovered, a little longer and with slightly more off-kilter percussion and sax refrains – and dig that triangle! Still keeping the stomping, rasping, honking feel of the released version in place, but amplifying the quirkiness no end, this take was probably deemed a little too unconventional for release, but again it has fast become the version today. We are pleased to finally offer up this version on 45rpm vinyl for the first and what will also probably be the last time ever! Backed up with the original Savoy take, as released, which is still an incredible sound in its own right.

The label has been named ‘Saxco’ in tribute to the late and very, very great bandleader, songwriter and arranger Sax Kari, whose long and largely unsung career enhanced that of many other artists. Sax passed away just over a year ago, with little to no tribute or fanfare in the mainstream media, and not even much noise made in R&B circles. We can only recommend further investigation into Sax’s long and winding career, and would say that any 45 bearing his credit is one worth listening to... (Jazzman)

Seminal booze blues from Amos Milburn, sparking a million spin-offs and answer records when it hit the R&B charts in the early 50s. A song which, even if you've heard it a thousand times, can't fail to put you in a better spot. Which is odd really, as the lyrics are the polar opposite of uplifting Amos missus has walked out on him and he is pleading with the barman not to kick him out on the street. And he's not asking for much, just a Scotch with a Bourbon chaser and a nice Pint to wash it down. Ah, we've all been there, haven't we!?!? (Jazzman)

2 really superb Jump movers back to back from the always excellent Buddy Lucas. 'I Got Drunk' is a brash stomper with excellent vocals about boozing and being totally sozzled! On the other side, Buddy takes a step back to lead the band and hand vocal duties over to Almeta Stewart. (Jazzman)

"Classic Pittsburgh twin spin monster two sided double header - yes indeedy. I thought "Sloppy Drunk" was the best R&B drinking song, but I reckon "I Got Drunk" might just top it. Midland takes charge of our 185th FACT mix.

The up-and-coming producer/DJ announced his arrival earlier this year with the ‘Your Words Matter’ 12″, a collaboration with his friend Ramadanman released on Will Saul’s Aus Music label. This was followed by Play The Game, a four-track EP on Phonica Records that really showcased the breadth of his sound. Midland makes warm, tensile house and techno, but the narrative shape of his tracks and his regular deployment of fragmented, ethereal vocal snippets betray the influence – conscious or otherwise – of dubstep individualists Burial, Pangaea and Joy Orbison.

If his epic 23-track FACT mix is anything to go by, our man also draws inspiration from much further afield. It’s packed with unreleased material, including Midland originals ‘Shelter’, ‘Hub’ and ‘Dead Eyes’, together with his remix of Caribou’s ‘Sun’ and cheeky re-edits of Washed Out and Massive Attack, and Appleblim & Ramadanman’s immense, forthcoming ‘Void 23′. There’s also classic house from Kerri Chandler, shark-eyed minimal from Arnaud Le Texier and DJ Koze, plus recent cuts from Space Dimension Controller, Workshop, 6th Borough Project and a special edit of Boards Of Canada exclusive to this mix.

This Monday’s FACT mix is by a man named Four Tet. He should require no introduction.

Born Kieran Hebden, Four Tet was already making waves as a member of the group Fridge when he dropped ‘Thirtysixtwentyfive’, his 1998 debut single for Trevor Jackson’s Output label (you can probably guess how long the track lasted). A debut album, Dialogue followed, but what really propelled Hebden to stardom – and set the tone for Four Tet as one of music’s most celebrated and in-demand remixers, later lending his magic to Bloc Party, Radiohead, Anti-Pop Consortium and many more – was his remix of Aphex Twin’s ‘[Cliffs]’, commissioned for Warp Records’ Warp 10 + 3: Remixes collection.

A series of acclaimed albums for Domino followed, along with more improvisational collaborations with late jazz drummer Steve Reid, the end credits of a Bond film, and a blink-and-you-missed it 12” release with Burial, accumulating in this year’s There Is Love In You – arguably Hebden’s most realised, composed, and beautiful album to date.

A large part of Four Tet’s musicianship in recent years has revolved around his residency at Plastic People, the much-loved East London club that earlier this year faced closure. Well, seeing as it’s now re-opened, Hebden will be restarting his residency this Saturday, September 11, and this mix is done to celebrate it. Ramadanman, Villalobos, Oni Ahyun and more feature, along with Four Tet’s own mixes of Rocketnumbernine and Bob Holroyd, and an original new Four Tet track for Soul Jazz’s Future Bass compilation.

Global Communication To Reform both live and in studio......

After close to 15 years apart, electronic duo Global Communication will reunite for a live show in Amsterdam next month.

Comprising Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, both of whom went on to find success in other areas of electronic music, Global Communication’s ‘90s work is considered seminal, particularly their debut album 76:14, an interstellar ambient house-fest that still sounds inspiring today. They also compiled number 26 in Fabric’s mix CD series, but Pritchard had moved to Australia by that point, so they never collaborated in person while recording it.

Well, now the two will join forces again for two shows at the SCI+TEC showcase at Amsterdam’s Dance Event [via Resident Advisor]. The pair claim that their sets will “span many genres and eras, and explore our inspirations from early ’90s techno, house, ambient and electronica right up to the cutting edge of modern production.”

And that’s not all, GC have confirmed that there will be more live dates next year, and even better, they will begin producing new music together again. Good show. (FACT Magazine)

"Seminal electronic band Meat Beat Manifesto (MBM) is gearing up for the release of its new album "Answers Come in Dreams" via Metropolis Records on October 12, 2010. Minimal, textural and cinematic in scope, this album follows sound sculptor and music innovator Jack Dangers into more experimental territory. An artist who sees the very fluid connection between audio and visual, Dangers will be creating videos for each of the twelve tracks on the record - welcome news for those who are familiar with MBM's mindblowing live performances that combine a sonic electronic assault with their stunning and often provocative and political video mash-ups.

"I don't feel like this is a new direction," explains Dangers about the minimal nature of this record. "It's just an extension of my sound. Maybe it's more minimal than previous records - that was a conscious decision because I am making a video for each song more or less."

Also known for his astute political observations and often outspoken stances through his music and live performances, Dangers has steered his trademark acute attention away from government for this release since the political environment is shifting.

"With the politics in the country taking a small turn for the better, I didn't feel the need to comment so much and decided to put more focus on the music," he says. "Plus, it's easier to make a point with video - it's more visceral...straight into the mind's eye, straight to the point."

Self described half-snarkily as "sub harmonic colonics...schadenfreude with extreme prejudice on those disbelievers of 7Hz," "Answers Come in Dreams" is just that - a mind-flushing reboot of the current state of music. New ORB Album to be released..featuring David Gilmour

Electronic music group The Orb will release their next album called Metallic Spheres in October 2010 and features the work of Pink Floyd guitarist, David Gilmour.

The album will be released in multiple formats worldwide and, according to the blog on David Gilmour's website, all artist royalties will be going to helping British hacker Gary McKinnon fight off extradition to the USA.

The Orb, the successful and influential UK 'ambient/house' collective, came to collaborate with David Gilmour after working together on a version of Graham Nash's "Chicago" for a charity project. Youth (aka Martin Glover), a frequent Orb accomplice, was invited to create a remix, and he and Alex Paterson, as The Orb, were so energized by the task that they continued working until it was an album-length entity. Having asked Gilmour to bring his guitars to Youth's studio in South London to prolong and enrich their new creation, the trio worked up a sonic mixture in a range of styles. Thus, the 'Metallic Spheres' project was born.

'Metallic Spheres' is designed to be heard in two parts - 'Metallic Side' (24'48"), and 'Spheres Side' (25'09"). Also present are five musical sub-divisions in each part. The album uniquely utilizes David Gilmour's discernable electric guitar and lap steel guitar, Alex Paterson's sound manipulation, keyboards and turntables, and Youth's bass guitar and keyboards.

The American's want to get their hands on Gary McKinnon for hacking into US Military computer systems in the wake of the September 11th attacks.

Gary, who has Aspergers Syndrome, claims he was just looking for the existence of aliens on the computer systems. He has admitted he did the crime but it is felt by some that sending a man with mental illness to the likes of Guantanamo Bay (where the Americans routinely torture British citizens) is not on!

Perhaps the Americans should think twice about putting sensitive information on the Internet in the first place, especially with China and Russia's blatant use of it as an economic and political weapon!

"Not many single releases can be labelled as events, especially not in the ever homogenised techno world, but the first single from Model 500 in eleven years, and the first recorded by the new band line up is most definitely an event.
It’s only fitting that this single is released on R&S Records, whose relationship with the man widely acknowledged as the originator of Detroit techno goes back 17 years and who released the last Model 500 album back in 1999.
In 2007 Atkins partnered up with Mike Banks from Underground Resistance to form a Model 500 band. It wasn't the first time they had played together as Model 500 but this time Atkins added Detroit DJ/producer DJ Skurge to the mix along with longtime associate and established funk and techno producer Mark Taylor.
As the "new" Model 500, they began performing as a band, debuting at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and not too long later, performing at festivals in Europe and Japan.

This single is the first music to come from sessions of the new line up, with Juan Atkins, Mike Banks and Mark Taylor sharing writing credits.
OFI is classic Model 500, the kind of insanely funky electro-techno that Juan Atkins pretty much invented with amazing vocals from Juan himself. Underground Resistance legend ‘Mad’ Mike Banks comes correct with a superb stripped down remix of OFI in true UR style. "**Clear Vinyl** Heavyweight remix package from Echospace, pitting the ethereal space-pressure of Steve Hitchell and Rod Modell's CV313 against the claustraphobic dub menace of Kevin Martin's King Midas Sound and the layered ambience of Rafael Anton Irisarri's 'The Sight Below'. Its the King Midas version that pretty much owns this record though, more or less completely re-structuring and re-working the original into a noxious burner complete with the signature deadpan narration of Roger Robinson and the far-flung, almost detached vocal delivery of Hitomi pitted against a compacted tangle of deeply unnerving low-end rumbles and a mesh of effects and midnight drones worthy of Martin's involvement with Experimental Audio Research all those years ago. Remixes are rarely this ambitious - and it's a credit to all parties involved that the end result is a substantial contribution not only to the Echospace discography but to the King Midas Sound canon - small and perfectly formed as it is. The Sight Below, meanwhile, keep much more closely to the original's genetic code, unwinding hazy dub chords around a padded 4/4 with subliminal washes of melody that have become something of an Irisarri signature over the last couple of years. Ending off the twelve, Modell and Htchell reserve the flipside for themselves with an extended live mix that lifts the track into a more defined warehouse environment, with shuffling percussion and fathoms-deep bassline intact. "Debut release on Alex Nut's new label: Ho Tep!* Throwing Snow's debut 'Un Vingt' is the 1st drop on Alex Nut's promising new label, Ho Tep. The A-side is a very canny blend of broken dubstep and more psyched-out textures, perhaps best described as the mid-way point between older Martyn releases (before he went house) and Shackleton (er... before he went house too!). However, there is a unquantifiable element to this track that makes it stand out, whether it's the chord progressions or the tucked drums we're not sure, but it's impressive either way. On the flipside, it'd be fair to put 'Cronos' with the wonkier, or more progressive dubstep brigade, along with the likes of Floating Points and Illum Sphere, but again, there's a natural kink and cosmic inclination that puts this fella out on his own limb. "Ladies and Rudeboys, this has to be one of the best twelves of 2010. Addison Groove is the Jukin' alter-ego of Headhunter. Over the last 12 months he's become notorious for ripping through fierce sets of Chicago Juke music; the mutant niche offspring of DJ Funk and Slugo's booty house designed to incite mindblowing dance moves from liquid-hipped quicksteppers. If you don't know what we're talking about, get on youtube and peep some DJ Nate or Walacam videos. Anyway, Headhunter has bravely stepped out of the dubstep shackles to craft his own take on the style, resulting in the anthemic 'Footcrab'. He takes the 808-derived percussion of Juke proper and reconstitutes the groove at a 'step compatible 136bpm, contrasting the 808's booming potential with hi-pitched toms and rapid-fire samples intoning the title 'Footcrab/Footcrab/F/F/F/Footcrab' to make the dancefloor go f*cking spare. It's already become ubiquitous in the sets of everyone from Kode 9 to Loefah and now with a full release we expect things to go off. On the flip we get the slightly more laid back 'Dumbsh*t' which still works it hard but just doesn't have the same velocity as it's dancefloor challenging bruv on the flip. Split over 3 heavy 12"s, each marked with individual DMZ catalogue numbers, the album rolls with it's own sense of space and pace that's incredibly unique to Mala's imagination. The delicate contrast of glassy keys and skull quivering subs in 'Unexpected' starts the dance according to his mantra of "Meditate On Bassweight' before turning to the sci-fi darkside with the extraordinary dreadnaught vibes of 'Pop Pop Epic', a hulking ten tonne stepper staring red-eyed and ready from yer quaking speaker cones. The scrunched synth and visceral pressure of fan's favourite 'Eyez' makes an appearance on the second plate, backed with the creepily affective special 'Mountain Dread March', and a final disc presents the tentatively probing keys of 'Livin Different' replete with Ital subbass harmonics and finally the gargantuan skank of the title track, built fi dem wha' do. Perhaps our only gripe with the album is that he could have flexed out on a wider range of tempos, but that's really only a small concern as the tracks we do have are f**king outstanding. "Listenin To The Records On My Wall", is the perfect introduction to why Skream's current level of success is just the beginning. The title card of Madlib Medicine Show No. 8 reads: Imagine an 80-minute music history course talking place in a dusty, hazy studio with wall-to-wall jazz vinyl - records from the past 40 years – jazz, fusion, funky, obscure. Madlib’s been busy this year. And while his recorded output always spans the gamut, he often returns to recurrent themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base – or bases, as it were. Jazz is one such base.
High Jazz, the previously released Madlib Medicine Show album, showed a marked development in Madlib’s craft: every element of jazz was encapsulated in that eighty-minute opus. "You won’t find the name Bobby Jackson in the jazz books. Yet here is a remarkable man who did more than anyone to promote live jazz in his hometown of Minneapolis, risking everything to open a venue for jazz lovers and putting on such luminaries as Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk and Elvin Jones. In so doing he rode the wave of financial insecurity, dealt with problems involving drugs, the law and the police, not to mention the issues and temperaments of the musicians themselves. Yet he still managed to keep things together enough to record a truly deep and inspired album with his band - although it took another 8 years before it was finally released, albeit in minimal quantities and with zero distribution!

And so the seventh release in our HOLY GRAIL series tells the story of Bobby Jackson and his Café Extra-Ordinaire. The music is deep, modal and progressive jazz. The story is one of bearded coffee-drinking jazz heads, Elvin Jones shedding tears, silver foil backdrops, and we also reveal what happened when a young man named Prince ventured into the café one day with the intention to sit in on a jam session!
The LP is a reproduction of the original, pressed on 180g virgin vinyl. The CD also contains a 12 page colour booklet with previously unpublished pictures provided by Bobby Jackson himself. Nothing much has changed since ‘Away with the Melancholy’, the first album recorded by NYB. It sold out everywhere, quickly, and much was said about the band, much of it rumour and conjecture. They have yet to perform live, and they still refuse to do interviews. We put out their records and we still haven’t even met face to face!

Of course what really matters is whether or not they make good music. Here’s a single that’s taken from their new album, ‘Tuck in with the Natural Yogurt Band’, which will be out in the autumn. Let your ears decide!"

Marga Benitez - Geechie Goomie/ Winos on Parade (JBJ 1007 - Marga/Jukebox Jam) 7"

"It’s our 7th release on the Jukebox Jam label, so we thought it was about time to throw you a curve ball with something truly interesting and unique…Back to back on one 45 are the 2 best sides from the 2 super hard to find singles accredited to the mysterious Marga Benitez, a calypso singing ‘exotic dancer’ originally from the Caribbean who first made her way to a studio in 1954 with vocal group the Mello Tones. The label artwork for this reissue, incidentally, features an illustration of the lady herself, in full shake ’n’ maraca mode!

The top side here features the potent and intoxicating concoction that is ‘Geechie Goomie’, a record unlike any other we’ve ever heard like of. The slinky, seductive tones of Ms Benitez and her whacked out lyrics sit alongside an almost clunky exotic piano-led accompaniment and some oddly sinister backing vocals from the Mello-Tones to create a wonderful record which was perhaps always destined to find its audience in another time and place.

The B-side features the prize of the earlier session for Decca Records, ‘Wino’s on Parade’, a curious one-off oddity which should definitely appeal further to fans of the weird and wonderful with its unique blend of calypso vocals, quirky story-telling lyrics and doo-wop backing vox. Both singles dually flopped on original release and whilst ‘Geechie Goomie’ has had a small but dedicated following on the Belgian popcorn scene for a while, we anticipate that with this limited run 45rpm reissue the time and place for Marga Benitez’s indisputably unique charms has finally arrived!" "Madlib follows Brain Wreck Show with the seventh installment in his Madlib Medicine Show, a jazz album with his Yesterdays New Quintet called High Jazz.

Madlib's been busy this year. And while his recorded output always spans the gamut, he often returns to recurrent themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base – or bases, as it were. Jazz is one such base. This year, he's already released two albums from "spin off bands" that he introduced on the 2007 Yesterdays New Quintet Yesterdays Universe album. And, with High Jazz, Madlib begins anew – offering familiar jazz sounds from a series of "new" groups from his ever-augmenting cosmos. Call it "Yesterdays Galaxy."

High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis's Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib's craft. Every element of jazz is there. Is that tune modal-funk? Was that song psych-fusion? Was that a bossa-tinged run or another kind of latin-affair? Where did that sitar come from? Madlib's Yesterdays-excursions are never easy to categorize and that's the point – while experiencing chops like these, the desire to rigidly define takes a back seat to aural pleasure.

The Madlib Medicine Show series is a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton stack of vinyl.

Pariah – Safehouses EP 2x12" (TEST PRESSING) [RS1005]

"The recently refreshed and newly vibrant R&S Records – they who released James Blake’s breakout ‘CMYK’ recently – are housing the second release from London based Scot, Pariah. Having been vocal fans and supporters since we first heard ‘Detroit Falls’ b/w ‘Orpheus’ at the tail end of last year the new EP is a welcome listen as Pariah displays the breadth of his tastes, flexing his production muscles in all directions from tribal roll outs and deep house textures to tweaked hip hop and ambience.

Percussive roller ‘The Slump’ drops hard from tribal accented beats into an almighty bass pulse that would make Untold and Ramadanman proud. Eski-like beats stomp under the building layers of percussion and bass weight until a release comes in the form of melodic soulful vocal samples and twilight pads. Like a garage cousin of Rishi Romero’s 'African Forest' in a head on collision with Pulse-X and a healthy does of melancholic melody; it’s a big one. With its deep and housey vibes ‘Prism’ is a welcome addition to the front end of the EP, where the dance floor is more of an obvious target. It’s a subtle number mind, keeping it close with a tight and bumpy percussive roll; synth’s refract and spin off in different directions over building wide screen pads.

The late night vibes of ‘Railroad’ take things down to nice and blissful as Pariah excels at a slower more bump laden tempo. He merges that awkward hip hop vibe with a slinky garage bump with ease; its like you’re stuck on a bus mid summer, heavy with sweat with no hope of getting to where you got to go on time. Sweeping melodies with an emotional pull get pushed into shape by deep bass and junglist breaks before it all melts into field recordings and the next track ‘Crossed Out’ which takes off where ‘Prisim’ left but with a rattling garage bump more prominet.

The final two tracks see Pariah in atmospheric mode, first up is ‘C - Beams’ where he harnesses his inner Dilla, which he kets stutter out under field recordings, bittersweet soundtrack pianos and computer game lilted funk. Things go deeper still with atmospheric drones on the closing track ‘Safehouses’, its almost reminiscent of GAS in some ways, its layers of sound wrapping itself around your ears before it engulfs you in a bed of looping tones. ‘Safehouses’ is a varied and solid EP with enough range and scope to keep the dancefloor working; though its real strength lies in its diversity and range of flavours and styles on offer". Dave Pearce presents a 6 Mix special charting the history of the Street Sounds compilation albums which dominated UK dance music in the early 1980s.

Started in 1982 by London based Streetwave Records as a way for people to get hold of expensive, rare dance and hip-hop 12 inch records only in available in the USA, Streetsounds compilation albums bought previously underground music onto Britain’s high streets with a new album every three month. Street Sounds compilations soon became essential for anyone into hip hop, house, rare groove or electro music, at a time when the British charts were dominated by the New Romantic bands like Visage and Spandau Ballet.

Founder Morgan Khan licensed early tracks from Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaatta and The Fatback Back as well as opening the doors for US labels like Def Jam and Profile recordings, at a time when the UK music industry was still a closed shop for anyone but the traditional major labels. Morgan Khan joins Dave in the studio to tell the incredible story of how a Hong Kong-born Indian who grew up in 1970s London came to be so influential in the early days of dance music and how Street Sounds helped bring hip hop and electronic music to the mainstream. Dave and Morgan also play and talk about seminal tracks from the Street Sounds back catalogue including D-Train, Scott La Rock, Roy Ayers and Todd Terry.

Addison Groove is, in fact, an alias of Headhunter, a dubstep mainstay who’s released a multitude of singles for Tempa as well as an album for the label, Nomad. He’s been playing Chicago juke in his DJ sets for a while now, and his work as Addison Groove is where that influence is allowed to come to the forefront, with stripped down drum machine beats, acid basslines and hip-hop / booty-leaning vocals.

His FACT mix starts off in the 120-130bpm range and finishes at about 160, taking in Detroit Grand Pubahs, Mosca, Ramadanman, Rashad, DJ Spinn and Leatherface along the way. There’s also plenty of unreleased Addison Groove tracks, including ‘Footcrab VIP’.

Debuting on Tempa in 2002 with ‘Fat Larry’s Skank’, Kode9 has spent the last decade exploring an aesthetic that’s taken him from suffocating dread-filled dubstep to toxic house music. Along the way, he’s released a superb album (Memories of the Future, with frequent collaborator Spaceape) and become just as famous for his record label as his own productions: since Hyperdub’s inception in 2004, it’s released albums by Burial, Ikonika and King Midas Sound, and singles by Zomby, Terror Danjah, Cooly G, Mala and more.

This month, 9 will release the latest in K7’s DJ-Kicks series of mix CDs, a journey from elasticated house and dancehall, through soul, funk and hip-hop, to overbearing dubstep and grime. Kode is one of the world’s best DJs – his extended sets at Plastic People last year are spoken of with pure reverence, and this year he’s let out specialist mixes in 2step and “sino-grime”. Here he contributes a mix of “mostly ’94-’96 jungle”, bound by an icy, misty quality. Lemon D, DJ SS, Undercover Agent and more feature.

Next week, Hyperdub, Plat du Jour and FACT will be presenting an off-Sonar party at Club Mondo, Thursday 17 June. Madlib follows History of the Loop Digga: 1990-2000 with the sixth installment in his Madlib Medicine Show, his psych-prog-avante-freak-out-funk rock mix Brain Wreck Show. Madlib s been pegged as a jazz guy as far back as 2000, when he as his alter ego Quasimoto released the song "Jazz Cats." His releases with the fictional "jazz group" Yesterdays New Quintet didn't help matters. But, no matter how many jazz records are thrust at him by money-hungry record dealers, he most often at least lately gravitates to the rock side of the spectrum. That's late 60s to late 70s psych-prog-avante-freak-out-funk rock mind you; from the Tropicalia of Brasil to the Krautrock of Germany to the fuzzy sonds of mid 70s Nigeria, the Beat Konducta's rock tastes know no cultural bounds. Actually, we're not sure if they know any bounds. This an introductory mix entitled the Brain Wreck Show (admission, he wrote on the CD master, "One Brainticket" an homage to one of his favorite Krautrock bands) should serve to give its listeners a delightfully freaky funked up experience into the rock side of Madlib's collecting conscious. We're glad you re along for the ride.

The Madlib Medicine Show series is a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton stack of vinyl.

“Young Teebs is more than just another producer in Southern California’s über-fertile beat scene. The Chino Hills resident—who swears that he’s moving back to LA proper very soon—is not only busy putting the finishing touches on a debut album slated for release on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label later this year, he’s also an accomplished skater, artist, and painter. Basically, he’s one of those dudes who’s seemingly good at just about everything he does. Like many of his musical brethren, he claims to have been originally inspired by trips to vaunted weekly club night Low End Theory, although we’re guessing that the fact that he also has spent time living with FlyLo and Samiyam certainly hasn’t stifled his development as an artist. Now he’s fresh off the release of his collaborative Tropics EP with UK producer Jackhigh, and about to embark on a summer tour with like-minded young buck Shlohmo, so we were lucky to pin Teebs down long enough to put together a mix for the XLR8R podcast. Jack Dangers is protective of sharing too many technical details about TapeLab, his Mill Valley music studio. The place is a tangle of cables, pins, and shiny knobs that evokes post–World War II films showing telephone operators making manual switchboard connections. It's here that the producer keeps a 600-pound synthesizer so rare that he's one of the only musicians putting it to use; a vocoder collection that'd make T-Pain envious; and a gong emblazoned with the logo of Meat Beat Manifesto, his highly influential 23-year-old band. Mac laptops and a freshly dead computer tower attest that he's no stranger to digital, but it's clear that Dangers' passions lie in analog gear.

Dangers' latest musical partner, an avowed Meat Beat fan named Jon Drukman, is a digitally leaning electro producer who works under the name Bass Kittens. Together, Dangers and Drukman call themselves the JDs. The moniker pays tribute to James Brown's band (and their own initials), and isan unintended metaphor for how they complement each other musically the way key Brown players Fred Wesley and Bootsy Collins did.

The JDs' full-length debut, Education, released May 4 via Drukman's digital label, Pretension Records, is a meeting of analog and digital minds. The electro- and breakbeat-heavy album blends the warm feel of the former with the crispness of the latter, and disparate sounds ignite. Waterlogged minor keys dovetail with metallic beats on the opener "Into the World." "I Don't Know When to Stop" offers a vocoded voice cheerfully proclaiming the title as '80s breakdancing beats dissolve in a tangle of robotic bleeps, while "Dead Calm" mounts a multilayered attack of bizarre boings, spoken samples, and skittering ringtones. It's a taut collection of songs paced for the dancefloor, yet still possessing enough sonic details for the homebound headphone listener.

Most of Education was recorded in two months; it was released as soon as it was completed. "One thing I like about music being centered on the Internet is that the artist is in control," Drukman says of the speed of the record's release. Meanwhile, the Meat Beat Manifesto album will have been finished for more than a year when it comes out in September. The lag is partly because Dangers is still in discussions with labels interested in releasing the physical product in different territories.

The JDs — who've shared the stage for live stints in mutual friend Mark Pistel's band, Pistel — started working on music for fun about seven years ago. They'd run into each other at a party, and Dangers invited Drukman to TapeLab to check out its monster console. At the time of their first recording session, Drukman's wife was pregnant. After his daughter was born, Drukman put his musical efforts on pause. But he shared the two songs he and Dangers had produced with Pietro Da Sacco, a DJ on UC Irvine radio station KUCI. Da Sacco often played the exclusives on his show, Digital::Nimbus, and periodically asked Drukman whether more music would surface. Last fall, those queries spurred Drukman to call Dangers and see if he wanted to collaborate again.

It was good timing for Dangers. He was winding down work on the eleventh Meat Beat Manifesto album, tentatively titled Answers Come in Dreams. He'd also finished coproduction on a 1957 spoken-word recording from Beat-era humorist Henry Jacobs and former San Francisco poet laureate Lawrence Ferlinghetti. They began exchanging musical sketches by e-mail, and got together at TapeLab a handful of times to record improvisational pieces.

The resulting Education showcases a worthy battle for rhythmic supremacy between analog and digital audio technology. It also shows Dangers and Drukman as united minds behind the machines. (Comments By Tamara Palmer Wednesday, May 26 2010)

Roger Walters touring THE WALL again......

Roger Waters’ will be performing his rock opera The Wall in a series of concerts on The Wall Tour 2010. The US dates have been announced on his new website in what is thought to be the first leg of the tour. Hopefully Europe will happen in 2011.

Commencing on 15th September 2010 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, the tour will see The Wall performed live 35 times for what is one of the most eagerly anticipated tours of the Pink Floyd members past and present.

It has also been reported that the tour will "move on to Europe for another 57 dates beginning in March. Waters says he'd like to take the show to other territories, including South America." [source]

The band currently consists of Roger Waters on Bass/Vox, Snowy White and Dave Kilminster on guitars and California group Venice doing male backing vocals. A treat!

"Blake’s past releases on Hessle Audio and Hemlock have gathered him close to universal acclaim – not least from us – and ‘CMYK’ sees more of the fried synth torture and cut vocals that have become his trademark.

On the EP’s title track, which is both its immediate stand-out and a staple of recent DJ sets by Ben UFO and others, the staccato vocals are maybe more in your face than any Blake track to date, and also like most Blake to date, sounds very good. The rest isn’t bad either.

GUARDIAN INTERVIEW - Future go-to producer of UK urban pop? James Blake

Hometown: London.

The lineup: James Blake (vocals, music, production).

The background: James Blake is a 22-year-old producer who has been studying contemporary music at Blur's alma mater Goldsmiths College, and in a way it sounds as though he's regurgitating a lot of what he's learned, in the best possible way. There's a lot of music to take in here; certainly it's going to be harder than usual to say what it is, although we can have a stab at saying what he does.

He does a few things – three, principally, only two of which we've heard. He's a dubstep artist who's just signed to the excellent R&S label, and although we're not as knee-deep as Mary Ann Hobbs in the stuff, his 2009 debut 12-inch Air and Lack Thereof places itself superbly – in terms of production detail, noir melody and sense of London as exciting psychogeographic space – alongside Aidy's Girl Is A Computer, Black Sun and the best of the Hyperdub label.

The second thing for which Blake is making a name for himself are his R&B/ hip-hop-sampling exercises that he records as Harmonimix, where he reworks tunes like Lil Wayne's A Milli and Snoop Dogg's Drop It Like It's Hot. And thirdly there are his hissy, scratchy, simple and plaintive piano tracks recorded on his laptop. They're supposedly primitive but personal affairs featuring his own, albeit treated, vocals – like we say, we've not heard them, but we're guessing at an approximation of Moby's field recordings, only think London Fields, not somewhere rural and American.

Actually, Blake's new EP, CMYK, appears to be a conflation of those first two ventures. It comprises four tracks, and they're based almost solely on R&B samples from the likes of Aaliyah, Brandy and R Kelly. There are micro-beats, lots of space (or do we mean "lost in space"?), some Auto-Tuned vocals, possibly Blake's own, as well as cut-up, chopped, diced and sped-up or slowed-down male and female vocal melodies from barely recognisable urban hits. It's a kind of dubstep R&B, but unlike, say, Squarepusher's 2001 single My Red Hot Car or Aphex Twin's Windowlicker, which were equal parts loving and facetious homage to UK garage and Timbaland's avant-dance, this stuff appears to be a reverential take on the soundtrack to the 6'5" wunderkind's youth. The title track, for example, is a beautiful piece of music: twitchy, tense, but captivatingly melodic and brilliantly arranged, it essays a new form of intelligent but never arid, electronic urban soul.

The buzz: "There's a unique and playful soulfulness to Blake's tracks, which often feature his own singing voice slowed down by intense digital effects. The result is a bit like a futuristic, lurching take on Moby's Play" – Pitchfork.

The truth: Welcome to Blake's heaven (rickety late-70s Brit sci-fi TV show pun intended).

Most likely to: Make Blake the go-to producer of UK urban pop.

Least likely to: Hang around Deptford any longer than he needs to.

What to buy: The CMYK EP is released by R&S on 31 May.

Roy Brooks & the Artistic Truth - Ethnic Expressions (JMANLP.034)

Easily one of the most coveted and sought-after of all jazz LPs is the elusive Holy Grail that is Roy Brooks’ Ethnic Expressions. It’s not just rarity that makes a record of this nature so desirable, nor is it the compelling music within… sometimes, like a Van Gogh or a Picasso, it’s the personality of the artist himself that’s inexorably entwined with the record itself that lends a fascinating, mesmeric and mythical quality that simply can’t be contrived.

The sixth release in our HOLY GRAIL series is an attentive reissue of one of Detroit drummer Roy Brooks’ two LPs for the tiny Im Hotep label out of New York. This Jazzman release is in conjunction with P-Vine records of Tokyo, whose Japanese reissue has already vanished with only a handful having reached these shores late in 2009.

Ethnic Expressions was recorded live in NYC in 1973, and exhibits a powerful message of black consciousness and spiritual freedom. This is post-Coltrane progressive jazz of the highest order! With a cry to his African roots, Brooks’ music combines modal, rhythmic and Afro-centric jazz with politics, spirituality and a positive vibes. The result is deep, esoteric spiritual jazz that any fan into real deal vibrant jazz will require as essential listening.

The LP is a reproduction of the original, pressed on 180g virgin vinyl. The CD also contains a colour booklet with extra pictures and liner notes translated from those written by respected Japanese jazz collector Yusuke Ogawa.

Kellee Patterson - I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More, Baby/Mr Magic 7" (JM.075)

As covers go Kellee Patterson’s versions of the Barry White-penned classic and the theme made famous by Grover Washington Jr don’t fall far short of spectacular! Recorded back in sunny ’76, this is sublime femme soul with impeccable production, a classy double-sider that cannot fail to please!

BACKGROUND
Back in the ‘70s, when Kellee wasn’t winning beauty contests, she was winning singing competitions. The talented lady won a contract to record an LP for the esteemed Black Jazz label, before turning her hand to a more soulful album venture for Shady Brook. The single taken from the album included an abridged version of Barry White’s ‘Im Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More, Baby’, but here for the first time is the FULL LENGTH version, released here in its entirety as it was always meant to be heard. Backed on the flip with a stunning vocal rendition of ‘Mr Magic’, the tune that catapulted Grover Washington Jr into the big time, what we have here is a soulful seven that’s too good to ignore. DJs watch out for immediate dancefloor reaction, whichever side you decide to play.

BUNKER HILL - You Can’t Make me Doubt My Baby / Little Red Riding Hood 7" (JUKEBOX/JAZZMAN)

When David Walker did a spot of moonlighting under the pseudonym ‘Bunker Hill’ with Link Wray and his band, the alter-ego was necessary not only to avoid a conflict with his other commitments but also to allow Walker to break out from his gospel shackles and raise some hell – which he most certainly did on the unique and astounding set of recordings he made under this new moniker. Redefining the term ‘Blues Shouter’, Bunker Hill’s vocals are screamed, barked and growled with a truly wild abandon, like a deranged synthesis of Little Richard and Howlin’ Wolf. The accompaniment from Link Wray and his Raymen, meanwhile, is a masterclass of stark, primitive blues noise.

‘You Can’t Make Me Doubt My Baby’ is a bass heavy stomper, a rolling rhythm with cool piano hits and of course Walker’s gruff vocal. On the other side, ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf’ showcases Bunker Hill’s (even) wilder side as he yells and riffs a call and response sermon based on the nursery rhyme of the same name over an insistent, sparse, clattering drum-led back drop.

It’s worth mentioning that all of the original singles were released on terrible styrene, which as most collectors know deteriorates progressively on repeated playing. So not only is it a pleasure to offer up Bunker Hill’s unique madness to a wider audience, but also to preserve these two tracks on good quality vinyl for the first time.

WALTER WILSON - Love Keeps Me Crying / Not Now But Later 7" (SOUL7/JAZZMAN)

Another northern rarity on Wand - out now on SOUL7!!! And as usual this SOUL7 reissue is FULLY LICENSED and restored from the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES so it SOUNDS GREAT – unlike what you get from SHODDY BOOTLEGS! And in keeping with the spirit of collecting the pressing run is limited to ONLY 500 COPIES worldwide!

Through our Soul 7 label we are committed to the continuing pursuit of the rarest and most sought after quality soul sides on the planet. For our latest release, few could argue that we haven’t kept our part of the bargain as we bring you a reissue of Walter Wilson’s awesome two-sider from the Wand catalogue. A real lost gem of mid-‘60s soul, the single gives us a Northern dancer from the very tip-toppest shelf on the ‘A’ and a real beauty of a mid-tempo ballad on the flip. Why the single is so scarce is anyone’s guess.

Wand was a large and prolific independent and though it is common to find obscure titles on such labels – records which perhaps had one promo run and were then canned – rarities of this magnitude are unusual full stop. What we do know is that you could likely count the known copies of the original on one hand and that the last (perhaps the only?) to go through at online auction fetched a healthy figure of over $6000 (yes, six thousand US dollars).

Of course, such glaring figures make interesting reading but it’s no use if the record doesn’t hold up musically. Have a listen below, and we think you’ll agree that Walter Wilson’s two fine ‘60s soul sides hold up perfectly.

Back in the 90s, “beat tapes” were literally that: cassette tapes of beats that a producer made either for himself, friends, or potential collaborators. Madlib made a bunch of them in the days between his early productions for the Alkaholiks (circa ’92) and the release of his Quasimoto album (2000), after which he took a couple of years off of the beats to focus on making jazz music before beginning a new era of hip-hop with Madvillain, Jaylib and Beat Konducta.

This collection of beats showcases the way that Madlib’s early hip-hop demos were filtered out to his crew of friends and associates, providing an opportunity for a unique view into Madlib’s working process. These beats, often freestyled on SP1200 or whatever machine he had at the ready, were picked up by rappers over a period of many years. Trainspotters will find it interesting that beats later destined for the likes of Wildchild and Percee P were made some years before those albums saw release.

This album is punctuated with a series of early solo-raps by Madlib and his Quasimoto alter ego and features the crew known collectively as CDP – those rappers who worked side by side with Madlib during the days of his Oxnard CA-based “Crate Diggas Palace” studios. The Madlib Medicine Show series is a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music.

Madlib Medicine Show #5: The History of the Loop Digga will be released on CD, digital and a deluxe 3LP format. The deluxe 3LP set includes 34 minutes of vocal & instrumental material not available on the CD or digital release, and one-of-a-kind individually screened covers by Hit+Run. The artwork is by Benjamin Marra who has created a comic book for the album about the fictional 90s-era Rapper X who goes on a vengeful cop-killing rampage. The comic is included with the CD.

"On February 28, 2010, Guru went into cardiac arrest and, following surgery, fell into a coma.[11][12] It was claimed that Guru had briefly wakened from his coma[13] but died on April 19, 2010, aged 48, from multiple myeloma.

Solar claimed that Guru had awoken from his coma whilst DJ Premier and members of the rapper's family stated that he never regained consciousness from his coma. Guru's family claimed that Solar prevented them from contact with Guru during the latter's final illness. The validity of the death-bed letter has been challenged by Guru's family. Harry J. Elam, Guru's older brother, wrote a personal memoir in remembrance of his brother, Keith “Guru” Elam, published in the Boston Globe on April 23, 2010" (Wikipedia)

Premier Responds.....

It has been three days since Guru passed away from cancer and until now, his partner in the seminal rap duo Gang Starr, DJ Premier, had yet to comment. Finally, the DJ/producer ended his silence this afternoon (April 21) by releasing a statement, expressing his thoughts on the death of the rapper born Keith Elam

“It was a sad day for me to get confirmation on the death of a man who I will continue to call my brother,” Preemo said.

“From 1988-2004 we experienced so much success together that we were able to expand our business independently and give each other what Guru called ‘creative space,’ before planning to reunite for our seventh LP when the time time was right,” he continued. “Tragically, we will never reach that day.

“I’ve been asked to comment on a letter speaking ill of me which was supposedly written by Guru in his dying days,” he added, addressing a press release delivered by Guru’s business partner Solar. “All I will say about it is our time together was beautiful, we built a hip-hop legacy together, and no one can re-write history or take away my love for him. One thing I would never do is play around with the truth about his life.”

“I will celebrate Guru’s life…I will honor his memory…I will grieve with the Elam family over his untimely death…I will remember the Gang Starr foundation and all of the original members of the Gang Starr who came before me…mostly, I will cherish everything we created together as Gang Starr, forever,” he concluded. “I’m gonna miss hearing his signature monotone voice when he walks in the room, but the songs will always bring it back to me…his rhyme flows were insane, and I will never remove him from my heart and soul…rest in peace to the man who felt ‘satisfaction from the street crowd reaction’…I love you Goo.”

Guru suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year, according to a press release issued by Elam Family. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest, which put the rap legend in a coma. Dave Huismans brings the techno and dubstep fusion on this week’s RA podcast.

"Of the artists to emerge from the dialogue between techno and dubstep, The Hague’s Dave Huismans must be rated as one of the finest. His production roots are actually in broken beat and his Dogdaze moniker, but 2007 saw him launch the 2562 project on Pinch’s Tectonic Recordings, forging techno sounds to dubstep beat structures to great effect. While debut album Aerial was fairly singular and streamlined in its approach to the fusion of techno and dubstep, his sophomore effort showed a totally different side to Huismans’ sound. With more overt references to UK garage and house, Unbalance managed to scrape into the top ten of last year’s RA albums poll, with Oli Marlow calling it “a zenith for techno-tinged dubstep in 2009.”

He’s also been keeping busy with his A Made Up Sound moniker which operates in a slightly more conventional house and techno vein. Last year’s “Rework” on his own A Made Up Sound imprint and the four-track EP on Clone were essential releases if you like your 4/4 beats to be swung and bass-heavy, and those two adjectives are definitely something that you say about his effort for this week’s RA podcast.
