The Art Of Beat Digging Radio Documentary......

Caught this radio documentary the other day on the modern pastime of beat digging titled.....'Beat Mining With The Vinyl Hoover'...check it....its good stuff.....



"Broadcaster Toby Amies digs into the archives to discover the value and significance of old vinyl. He uncovers a network of dealers and buyers, supplying a community of 'crate diggers' and 'beat miners' and a world in which samples from records bought for a few pence in a car boot sale can provide the basis for a million-selling hit".

Just came across this Top 20 written up by Gerald Jazzman of Jazzman Records, courtesy of FACT MAGAZINE....Thought I'd share the article - and the link to the original piece.



"Of all places, it was the John Peel Radio 1 show back in the mid-‘80s where I heard my first proper funk 45. The rare groove scene in London was blossoming and Peel chose to play Alvin Cash's ‘Keep on Dancing’ amongst the usual selection of Napalm Death, Suicidal Tendencies and (inevitably) The Fall. “How refreshing”, I thought, and my journey into the music of black America began.

In those days funk 45s were viewed almost like novelty records, the odd one sneaking into the DJ record box amongst the more standard fare of LPs and twelve-inches. I remember thinking to myself, “why buy a single 45 for £8, when I can have a whole LP for £8?”

Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s the Northern Soul dealerships imported American soul 45s en masse. Funk 45s by the likes of Lee Fields, African Music Machine and Eddie Bo etc were hidden among them. Most of these 45s found their way into the collections of the mostly southern-based rare groove collectors and DJs via dealers such as Soul Bowl, Des Parkes, Des Toussaint, Gary Dennis and ‘Pop Beat’ Bernie. Funk 45 collectors as such didn’t really exist - there wasn’t really much of a selection to choose from, there was no network of funk collectors, and too few people cared about them for dealers to seek out new titles.

Then in 1994, DJs Keb Darge and Snowboy started the long-running club night Deep Funk. The club was unique in the fact that it was the only club in the world that exclusively played funk 45s. The collectors soon flocked to the spot where they would find that they were not alone in their love of this music. Knowledge began to be shared, and the heightened interest in the music meant many new discoveries were made. Money is a great motivator, and as the prices began to rise, so more rare records were uncovered. The records in this list are funk 45s (mostly from the period 1969-1971) that have garnered a healthy respect amongst funk DJs and collectors in this time. "A debut release from a new French talent with an ear for Indian soundtracks and funky grooves. But there’s no wishy washy Bollywood nonsense here, this is the real deal - three slamming pieces of hardcore sitar funk! Toulouse-based sitar maestro Païkan has been on a musical journey ever since he entered the conservatory at the precocious age of 5 to study violin, singing and music theory. Since the end of his formal studies, his experiments and collaborations have touched pretty much every far-reaching corner of the popular music underground. More recently Païkan began to lend his mastery of the Sitar to more a acoustic-led funk and jazz sound, which is where we find him here on his debut release. As you know, our area of speciality is in finding and reissuing the lost and forgotten treasures of yesteryear, so it takes something pretty unique to pique our attentions away from that mission. Put simply: any new material has to stand up to and not feel out of place with the quality of those cherished original, vintage recordings. It should also stand alone as a piece of forward thinking music, not be mere retro-tribute fodder. Those are our guidelines, and we definitely believe that Païkan's three track 12" ticks all those boxes - and then some! Païkan's sound could be described as a four-way meeting of the minds between Shankar, Schifrin, Kuti and Hendrix. Sounds good, right? A modern master of the tenor and soprano saxophones, Davis's own albums are true gems of modern jazz, but astonishingly much of his work never saw general release in the US or the UK. Less still has been re-released, and until now there has never been a representative compilation or career overview. And so it is with great pride that we at Jazzman present the first ever anthology of Nathan Davis.

The liner notes contain biographical detail and also details of the recordings themselves, as gleaned from our interviews with Nathan Davis and his professional colleagues. We also answer questions as to why he turned his back on the US to develop a career in Europe, his love of ethnic music, and why he spurned the limelight and opportunity to achieve fame. We also reveal his current interests and reflect upon his life as professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh, and we hope this album will be the first step toward the wider recognition that his contribution to jazz so richly deserves.

Background

Nathan Davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk.

Having turned his back on the US he spent the '60s living in Europe, regularly playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Donald Byrd and Eric Dolphy, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career in teaching in Pittsburgh. This collection includes recordings from his most significant albums as recorded in France, Germany, Turkey and the US. The tracks encompass a variety of styles, with performances on tenor saxophone, soprano and flute. The CD booklet/LP liners contain previously unpublished photographs and detailed biographical information, documenting a career which has seen him forge an individual path through the history of postwar jazz and help to pioneer jazz education in the US at the University of Pittsburgh.

"The original Ethio-jazz legend enters the fray. The Ethiopiques album series has steadily gathered steam in recent years, culminating in two huge shows during June 2008 at Barbican and Glastonbury. Raiding the archives of small studios and radio
stations in Addis Ababa from the ‘70s, the series has been a revelation, unearthing a true fusion of funk, soul and jazz with fivetone Ethiopian scales and traditional instrumentation and vocals. The ringleader of those recordings, vibesman and percussionist Mulatu Astatke, now embarks on his first studio album for over 20 years. The collaboration follows a sell-out gig at Cargo and a Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session earlier this year with The Heliocentrics (Stones Throw Records). Responsible for backing DJ Shadow, laying down beats for Madlib and Yesterday’s New Quintet and for fusing influences as diverse as Sun Ra, Axelrod, James Brown and Morricone on their debut album, the Helios, led by drummer Malcolm Catto and bassist Jake Ferguson, have fast become a unique powerhouse of free-thinking beatsmithery.
At Cargo in London, they backed Mulatu on a full set of his Ethiopiques classics, brought together and presented by Karen P’s Broadcasting and Red Bull. Since then, the process around the new recordings has been in full flow with Mulatu now back in
Addis Ababa armed with a Heliocentrics CD of groove ideas and riffs. As well as writing his own vibes and keyboard parts, Mulatu is using the project to build in some of the stunning indigenous sounds from Ethiopia, inviting tribespeople to record
local instruments and vocal parts for the sessions. “I have always wanted to involve Ethiopian cultural instruments in Ethio-jazz, playing Western 12-tone music,” explains Mulatu. “We’ll be experimenting – the musicians in The Heliocentrics are so great and I think we will make a wonderful album.” The project culminates in a full recording week at Heliocentrics studio in London during the first week of September and a full live tour during Spring 2009". When Madlib followed J Dilla’s now-classic Donuts with an instrumental concept-album of his own, a series was born. “Beat Konducta,” the alias he often scribbled on the beat CDs he handed to friends and potential collaborators, left the realm of the unknown and entered the record-buying public’s conscious as Madlib’s latest nom de plume. His unedited CDs often wove quirky narratives, served as obsessive listening material to those lucky enough to hear them, and became raw working material for Madvillain, Jaylib, Ghostface, De La Soul, Talib Kweli and Erykah Badu.

The concept of the Beat Konducta series was simple: put Madlib’s raw beat tapes into album form – one by one on vinyl, with two volumes at a time appearing on sporadically released CDs.

The first two volumes of Beat Konducta, Movie Scenes, were a soundtrack to a movie that existed only in Madlib’s mind. It’s score ranged from Blaxploitation soul to African-psychedelia, from Tropicalia to moody progressive rock. The second installment took its listeners on a tour of Bollywood, circa 1975. Beat Konducta In India paid sincere tribute to musical giants largely unheard of by Western ears. And kept the funk levels up all the way.

Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to... is a 42-track piece dedicated to the late J Dilla. Madlib and J. Rocc – arguably Dilla’s closest musical compatriots during his time spent in Los Angeles – lovingly remember their friend and reflect on his boundless influence. As was the case with Donuts and in keeping with the Beat Konducta’s all-embracing musical bent, this album does not settle into one groove for too long.
