#DuskDubs “World Cup Special” – Compiled By OriginalGidman

Here at the #DuskDubs studio, we have been bitten by World Cup fever, so Original Gidman has been digging in his vinyl vaults and come up with an amazing selection of records, focusing on the incredible sounds and rhythms of the host country Brazil...but of course, with the usual #DuskDubs twist.

So go make yourself a classic ‘Caipirinha’ cocktail and enjoy…. “Come On England!!!!”

True to form, Gidman has done a write up of each track: 

1. Cut Chemist - Intro (The Big Dig) - An excerpt from an interview with Cut Chemist when Madlib, J.Rocc, DJ Babu etc. went record digging in Brazil and discovered so many great records which would inform their own music.

2. Milton Nascimento / Lô Borges – Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser– Taken from what many regard as the best Brazilian album ever. Released on Odeon Fonografica Ltd records in 1972 on a beautiful 2xLP Gatefold release, it’s this original stereo version I have used here rather than the re-mastered version.

3. Dub Majestic – Kaya Babylon – The first of my selections from the amazing “Poulp Up Brazil !” compilation and released in 2013, which focus’s on individual Dub scenes from particular countries.

4. (Live Commentary) - Pele Goal From The 1970 World Cup Final.

5. Azymuth – Melф Dos Dois Bicudos (Harmonic 313 Remix) – This stunning head-nodding remix by the don that is Mark Pritchard is taken from the Limited Album 12” Sampler which was released in 2007 on Far Out Records. ….. Big Look !!

6. Black Junior’s – Mas Que Linda Estas (Vocal) – Often referred to as the first Hip-Hop group out of Brazil, these teenagers coming from São Paulo released this oldschool/electro track as a single in 1984. Their self-titled album was massive at the time, selling over 1 million copies.

7. Bebel Gilberto - Bananeria (Rae & Christian Remix) – The Manchester duo of Rae & Christian are on remix duties for Gilberto’s bossa nova classic. Released in 2001 on the album ‘Tanto Tempo Remixes’… the pair take the smooth sensual vocals and underpin them with a groovy bass shuffler.

8. Jorge Ben – Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) –Another Brazilian classic. Featured on Jorge Ben’s amazing album ‘África Brasil’ (1976), and like many of the tracks, this combines Brazilian, African, and American musical styles, resulting in a funky sing-a-long classic.  

9. Suba – Sereia – Taken from the 1999 album ‘São Paulo Confessions’ by the late musician Suba. This is a perfect example of the way he would marry Brazilian airy melodies and percussion with an electronic edge. Unfortunately, the Serbian born producer, who spent most of his life in Sao Paulo was involved in a tragic accident resulting in his death the same year the album was release. Go seek it out, it’s an amazing album, blurring the boundaries between electronica traditional Brazilian rhythms and beautiful ethereal vocals.

10. Tamba Trio – Mas Que Nada – Everyone knows the (1966) Sérgio Mendes version of this record, but like many Brazilian classics, when you start digging, you find out they were covered or penned by different artists. Originally ‘Mas QueNada’ was written by Jorge Ben on his debut album ‘Samba Esquema Novo’ in 1963 and many have covered it since – I’ve gone with Tamba Trio’s version, taken from their 1963Avanço album, although probably made more famous in the modern era, by Nike’s advertising campaign for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

11. Supreme Team (Madlib & Kareem Riggins) – Volta Porcima – Featured on Stones Throw Records 3xLP Box Set ‘Hella International’, which was released in 2009 in celebration of their yearly event at Miami's Winter Music Conference. Produced by Kareem Riggins and also one of the original crate-diggers Madlib aka The Beat Konducta, this track is an example of the influence of  “The Big Dig” which Cut Chemist speaks about in the ‘Intro’ of this  volume.

12. Dub Movement – Circense Melodica – The second of my selections from the 2013 compilation “Poulp Up Brazil !”.

13. Magic Drum Orchestra – Drop It Like It’s Hot – Magic Drum Orchestra formed by Ralph Cree and Glyn Bush aka Bigga Bush take Snoop Dogg & Pharrell’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and create an amazing 2014 cover version. Throughout the recording sessions the producers used over 100 drummers and percussionists, resulting in an amazing ‘live feel’ recording. The track segues into a medley of the Muppet Show theme and James Brown's Funky Drummer before climaxing in full-on batucada style drumming. Stunning!!

14. Waajeed - Jeedo Suave – This track definitely has worldwide credentials. Originally produced by Waajeed out of Detroit and released in 2009 on the Series One 12” on the Japanese Record Label ‘Jazzy Sport’. This is a cover version of the late and great Jay Dee aka J Dilla’s “Rico Suave Bossa Nova” from his 2001 Welcome 2 Detroit LP,  which originally sampled The Milton Banana Trio's "Cidade Vazia" from 1966. A perfect example of how crate digging and clever sampling results in a wonderful Brazilian sounding cover version.

15. Edu Lobo – Vento Bravo – My final ‘classic’ selection…. Featured on Edu Lobo’s ‘Missa Breve’ long-player which was released on the EMI & Odeon Fonográfica record label in 1973. Another rich toned melodic classic – there’s so many out there…. I urge you to get digging….  It’s all about “Dusty Fingers”

16. Pathless – Goddess – Amazing to think that in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s producers and artists out of Germany were embracing Brazilian rhythms and styles, and creating authentic sounding productions for the dance floor and the headphones. No more so, than at Munich’s Compost Records which released the ‘Glücklich’ series, five volumes of Brazilian Flavours From The Past And Present”. The production outfit Pathless combined the talents of Stefan Leisering, and Axel Reinemer who also recorded under the alias of  ‘Extended Spirit’ for Jazzanova’s record label – Sonar Kollectiv.

17. Depth Charge – Goal – Released back in 1990 and produced by the mighty J. Saul Kane for the ‘Vinyl Solution’ record label, run out from the shop on Portobello Road in London, which is now famous for spawning oldschool legends such as Depth Charge, Eon, and  Bizarre Inc. This track was the first of his two homages to World Cup Football- the second being the Romario 12” back in 1998.

18. Bebel Gilberto – Tanto Tempo (Peter Kruder Remix) – My second selection from the Tanto Tempo Remixes’ 2001 compilation. This time Peter Kruder steps up, out of G-Stone Records in Vienna, Austria, He reconstructs Gilberto’s bossanova standard into a deep techno/house killer in true Kruder style, while providing a hint of her ethereal vocals.

19. Les Gammas – Outra Vida ((Eddy & Dus Kontrapunkt Remix) – This wonderful remix can be found on the Outra Vida Remixes 12” released in 2002 on Michael Reinboth’s Compost Records Label. Les Gammas hand the remixing duties over to Eddy & Dus, a duo out of Croatia who expand on the original… moving it into Drum & Bass territory.

20. DJ Suv Featuring Tali – Do You Remember – While the Bristol Drum & Bass sound was taking over the Drum & Bass world in the mid to late 1990’s, with the likes of Roni Size, DJ Die, Krust and Suv,  all under the guidance and influence of Bryan Gee and Jumping Jack Frost’s Record Label V Recordings. The label began embracing the Brazilian Drum & Bass scene, showcasing Brazilian DJ’s such as DJ Marky, XRS and DJ Patiffe – This obviously had an impact on DJ’s like Suv who began making amazing Drum & Bass riddims with a Brazilian influence, for example this 2002 12” on Full Cycle Records.

21. Drumagick – Easy Boom – Also released in 2002 on Samba Loco Records out of Brazil, this wonderful Drum and Bass track has sunshine vibes oozing out of it in spades… sampling Jorge Ben’s ”Take It Easy My Brother Charles” 1968 classic – you can’t help but sing-a-long.

#TapeSessions is a hashtag a few of us have been using to highlight the posting of 'Rave/Hardcore/Jungle' mixtapes on Twitter ... Do a search and check them out..... they offer an insight into the scene back in the day.

Most of them were recorded at events or specifically for commercial release, however after a few months of posting these mixtapes, I was amazed when one of contributors to these posts told me of a some mixtapes that he had in his possession....

Three 'Bedroom Mixtapes' never before released or even heard by the general public....

Well here they are in their full glory.. digitised and available to download......

"It was 1990 and Ratty had just got his first decks. Along with LL Cool J's album 'Mama Said Knock You Out'.  Ratty was a massive LL fan. His graffitti 'Tag' was 'Lady's Love Kidd Groove'. Which you can still see around certain parts of Leamington.

So I asked Valerie, (my girl) to get Ratty to do me a copy. Which he did,
And I've still got it. Complete with wicked Ratty scratching. The B side of that tape is a Ratty from 1990 'rave' mix, complete with tunes like 'Devotion' etc. (Original Ratty business)

Fast forward to 91-92 and Ratty was the king of rave. Me and Val were over, (oh well) haha, but I'd become good friends with his younger bro.

So, when he was off playing Fantazia or wherever we'd sneak into his room for a go on his 3 decks. That was madness for us mate.

Technics, as you know were, and still are the Rolls Royce of decks. So to be near, let alone play them was just crazy. And dangerous.

I'd be Ratty and he'd be Robbie Dee, hahaha F***ing hell !!!

There were V.I.P. Tags strewn across his speakers from all the biggest raves.

And dub plates, white labels, promos all over the place. We'd rinse um out, then try to remember where we got um from, hahaha

And as you know, those dub plate acetates only last about ten plays. So, I think we may have f**ked him up a few times ! They were mostly Tango and SS, with the odd Rider, Doc Scott or Goldie thrown in, I'm talking major ish'.....

Then in 93, Fibre Optic blew up, with residents, Ratty, Tango, Pilgrim, SS, and Fallout, who ran the local record shop - Fibre Optic Records.

We all really fancied Fallout, so we'd spend all day, every day in the basement of that shop. Oh, and we liked the tunes too, haha.

I've got so many promos and white labels from her time at that shop,
Loved that place to the bone.
But anyway ... Quest, Wolverhampton, was about to destroy the Midlands, along with The Eclipse / The Edge, Coventry.

We were in on this shit believe me.

Kev, Ratty's older bro moved into the street next to me and told me all about these clubs. Said he'd get me in on the guest list. Walking into clubs with a swagger saying,

"Errr, we're with Ratty"

The door were like,

"Yeahhh, go through"

Hahahaha

We even tried it at clubs where Ratty wouldn't even be playing, Lol.
Suffice to say, We eventually got found out.

After a while, Ratty began to hate Robbie Dee. There's a video on YouTube that clearly shows Ratty's annoyance with him.

Around that time, he put together these two bedroom mixes. A more mature style, newer but still with that Bad Boy feeling..... In a word,  Ratty.

Most people think of Ratty as this mad, chopping mixer who scratched a lot, I prefer the seamless mixing quality he shows on these tapes.

The story behind me obtaining these Ratty tapes involves another friend.
He'd call in on Ratty and he'd grab his latest mix and give it me.

My good friend 'Shocker' would go boxing at the club near Ratty's house.Then call in after his training and grab the latest flex.

Never released, and, as far as I know, these are the original copies.
He'd bust a a mix and give it out, one time.

20 years later.... Here they are for your aural delight...... Enjoy and appreciate the culture from where these Tapes come from....."

Dusk Dubs returns again, and this week its battle royal time! It was about time that we threw the gauntlet down, turn the faders up, and asked two Dusk Dubs heavyweights to go toe to toe in a Dub War.

Both selectors bring their box of records, making their choices wisely, trying to outdo the other. I ready the sound system, play their tunes, mediate, and throw in the odd air-horn. Well, it is Dusk Dubs after all!

Stepping up, we have Original Gidman and General Camel. 'The Oracle' Vs 'The Ninja'….. 'The 89-93 Raver' Vs 'The 92-97 Raver'.
Will The General respect his elder? Will The Gidman have the stamina? Who will be the last man standing?

A classic 1982 dub version of Wayne Smith’s ‘Time is a Moment’ which amazingly, is based around Barbara Streisand's ‘Woman In Love’ melody.

Recorded in 1979 between the legendary Channel One Recording Studios and King Tubby Studios, this crazy dub can be found on African Anthem (The Mikey Dread Show Dubwise) LP.

Featured on the 1998 album ‘Northern Sulphuric Soul’, this is a classic Rae & Christian riddim and a serious ‘Mancunian Head-Nodder’.

This version can be found on the extended 4xLP ‘Down by Law’ album, and hits you with an old school party breaks vibe.

The Ragga Twins - Hooligan 69
A ‘Bleep & Bass’ classic from The Ragga Twins, aka Flinty Badman & Deman Rocker. On one of the UK’s pioneering ‘breakbeat’ labels, 'Shut Up & Dance'.
Originally released in 1990 and then again in 1991, this track was a firm favourite back in the day with DJ’s and ravers alike. Who can forget when that Prince sample would drop followed by the bleeps followed by that bass.
Dance floor destruction guaranteed.

ORIGINAL GIDMAN

Prince Fatty – Insane in the Brain
Released in 2010 on the 'Mr Bongo' imprint out of Brighton. This version of Cypress Hill’s ‘Insane in the Brain’ bounces along to a reggae/ska beat, with reverb and echo layered underneath Horsemouth’s delivery.
Definitely a ‘sing-a-long’ moment for the dance.

Rebel MC – Comin’ on Strong (Ruff Neck Mix)
Released in 1990 on Desire Records, Michael West aka Rebel MC (later to become Congo Natty), was one of the first artists from the UK Rave/Hardcore scene to begin merging reggae/ragga vibes with UK breakbeat well ahead of the Jungle Sound that would follow. This featured Tenor Fly, who would also appear on a number of classics from that period including ‘The Wickedest Sound’ and ‘Tribal Base’.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five ‎– The Message (Paul Nice Super Duty Bootleg Mash Up)
A true Hip-Hop anthem no doubt, but this time flipped with a reggae/dub vibe by Paul Kilianski, aka Paul Nice, out of New York. Known for his classic mix tapes during the late 1990’s, Paul mashes up the Furious Five’s rap over a skankin’ reggae beat with additional reverb and classic melodica.

Depeche Mode – Useless (K&D Session Remix)
An amazing remix by Kruder & Dorfmeister, who manage to turn Depeche Mode’s rock anthem into a blissed-out dub classic. At this point in their musical career, K&D seemed to be hitting that ‘Purple Patch’ as can be heard in the Compilation ‘The K&D Sessions’ (1998).

Primal Scream – Come Together (Andrew Weatherall Remix)
Possibly Mr Weatherall’s finest moment as a producer. He managed to combine the dance sensibilities of the 1990’s rave scene alongside indie rock. I first heard this on a ‘Flying Records’ mixtape back in the day, and to this day still manages to ooze euphoric energy alongside those dubbed-out beats.

Tosca – Orozco (Dubphonic Remix)
Featured on Tosca’s 2008 ‘Suzuki in Dub’ album, this track is a great example of that elegant dub sound that the G-Stone label do so well.
Killer sub bass.

Eddie C – You’re Welcome
A phat ‘slo-house’ groove from the now ‘closed-down’ Jisco Music label that manages to tick all the ‘DuskDubs’ boxes. Dubby, Jazzy and Housey.
I can’t get enough of this track!

GENERAL CAMEL

Peshay – Never Let You Go
Peshay returned this year on the Tru Thoughts label out of Brighton with the non-Drum & Bass album “Generation”, and what an album it is. This track is a great example of him experimenting with organic drums, horns, guitars and vintage synths to create a dreamy downtempo ‘head-nodder’.
Stunning!

J-Walk feat. Veba – Scarlet Menace
Originating from Manchester UK, the duo J-Walk, made up of DJ Martin Brew and studio guru Martin Desai started releasing music in 1996, but scored an underground classic with the ‘Soul Vibration EP’ in 2000. ‘Scarlet Menace’ is taken from their one and only album ‘A Night On The Rocks’ (2002) and features the fiery yet soulful vocals of occasional Rae & Christian collaborator Veba, and some seriously funky horns!

Meat Beat Manifesto – Spinning Round Dub
British breakbeat pioneer Jack Dangers aka Meat Beat Manifesto released the ‘…In Dub’ CD/DVD in 2004. It features some amazing dub bombs with this being one.
Check it, at your speakers peril!

Genaside II – Narra Mine
Originally released in 1991 during the Hardcore/Rave era, this breakbeat monster features both the ethereal vocals of Sharon Williams and one of the fiercest raga vocals I’d heard at the time from Killer Man Archer. Geneside II released a number of hardcore favourites during this period, including ‘The Alchemist’, ‘Death of the Kamikazee’ and ‘The Motiv’. But for me it will always be ‘Narra Mine’ that encapsulates the feeling of that era.

Some words from Harrison our resident #DuskDubs DJ.....

This week we happily welcome another Dusk Dubs resident, Original Gidman. Here from the conception, Gidman has already been within the foundations of the Dusk Dubs philosophy for many years prior to us even beginning it. His record collection, library of mixtapes, and all round knowledge of music can't be beaten. And his ethos of good music, regardless of genre, and positive vibes is what the Dusk Dubs family is built on. Not a day goes by that Gidman doesn’t msg me new music to check out…which when 80% of my day consists of listening to music, is some achievement. Not only do I listen to the music he recommends, but I take that music out and play it in my sets. I love that flow of knowledge and music that starts with him.

Myself, General Camel and the whole Dusk Dubs Family salute you Gids. We love your dedication to music, and we can't tell you how happy we are that (and this is said with maximum positivity and respect) you are such a musical nerd.

Below, are a few words from this week’s selector. As always, in true Gidman style, he has provided a little about each track. Well worth a read :

‘ For this volume I decided to take a #DuskDubs international excursion around the world, stopping off in the UK, Europe, USA, Jamaica and New Zealand….. Enjoy ‘

1. Om Unit – Ether (Terrorhythm)

Take from ‘The Corridor EP’ released back in 2010, this is one of Jim Coles aka Om Unit’s earliest releases. I can’t get enough of that Sci-Fi intro and Vangelis like synths alongside that driving bass heavy beat. Mr Coles has recently signed to Goldie’s Metalheadz label and released an amazing album on Civil Music – ‘Threads’… check it.

2. Urban Species - Predictably Unpredictable (Talkin’ Loud)

From the album ‘Blanket’ and released on Gilles Peterson’s infamous imprint Talkin’ Loud back in 1998. The outfit Urban Species were often grouped together with the likes of Massive Attack, Portishead and other Trip-Hop artists of the time. However, for me this track epitomises everything that is good about British Hip-Hop and with the enigmatic voice of Imogen Heap… oozing with “DuskDubs” vibe.

3. Guts – Skunkfunk (NOW Records)

Featured on Nightmare On Wax’s label compilation ‘Wax On Records’ in 2008 and produced by ‘Guts’ out of Paris, France, this track has that slo-mo funk running throughout and with a vocal hook to die for, will burrow its way into your sub-conscious…. No doubt !

4. Beanfield – Planetary Deadlock (Compost Records)

Staying in Europe, Beanfield hail from Germany and originally consisted of Jan Krause, Michael Mettke, Michael Reinboth and Tobias Meggle. Released back in 1996, this track featured on their self-titled album ‘Beanfield’. They soon became an influential production unit on the Compost Records rosta. Often sited alongside Faze Action, Fila Brazillia, and A Forest Mighty Black, these groups managed to merge organic sounds alongside a club/electronic ethos…. The result can be heard here….

5. Erykah Badu - The Healer (Motown)

Produced by Madlib aka The Beat Conductor back in 2007 and appearing on her 5th Studio album ‘New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War), this dubby ode to Hip-Hop is simply stunning in its sparse production and economical use of samples/instruments….. as Erykah says “This One Is For Dilla…..”

6. Thievery Corporation – 2001 Spliff Odyssey (ESL Music)

Staying in the US, the Thievery Corporation are made up of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. Based in Washington, they have been producing a mix of Dub, Bossa Nova and Jazz to great acclaim since 1995. This track is from their debut album ‘Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi’ (1997) and is a classic example of their Dub/Reggae vibe which I love so much.

7. Moby – Go (In Dub Mix) (D:vision Records)

What can I say about this record….. Originally released back in 1991, with its haunting riff sampled from the TV series ‘Twin Peaks’, the original version became an oldschool/rave anthem. This 1992 version remixed by Jam & Spoon, a techno/trance outfit out of Germany, first came to my attention much later on a Nick Warren ‘Back To Mine’ Compilation. Since then, I cannot get enough of its slowed down dubby basslines whilst maintaining the original Twin Peak chords that we all love so much – an amazing remix that completely flips the script…..

8. King Tubby – Bag Of Wire Dub (Blood & Fire)

A classic example of 1970’s dub out of Jamaica. Produced by King Tubby aka ‘The Dub Master’, who influenced later producers such as Scientist and King Jammy. The King sprinkles his ‘dub’ magic over Johnny Clarke’s vocals and transforms this reggae classic into a skanking wall of reverb. Amazing stuff… all hail ‘The King’

9. Errol Dunkley - A Little Way Different (Arawak)

Originally produced back in 1978, this reggae standard composed by Errol Dunkley himself, would later feature heavily in D.R.S ‘s Jungle/Drum & Bass anthem ‘Everyman’ from 1994. It’s the lyrical content of the original that resonates with me, and I can only assume also resonated with DJ Kenny Ken over 15 years later. “Everyman do his ting a little way different”…exactly what #DuskDubs is all about…..

10. DJ Shadow / David Rodigan – Rodigan In A Perfect World (Mash Up)

This cheeky mash-up featuring a David Rodigan MBE on intro duties, leads us into DJ Shadow’s Midnight In A Perfect World (Gab Mix). This version released on the infamous Mo Wax record label back in 1996 features The Gift Of Gab on vocal duties. He delivers a nocturnal sermon alongside Shadow’s amazing beats – perfect for the#DuskDubs hour….

11. Marc Mac – See Him Smile (featuring Etta James) (ABB Soul)

One of the founding members of 4hero and forces behind Reinforced Records, Marc Mac is rightly championed in the Jungle/Drum & Bass scene. He is also a massive Soul/Funk/Jazz head and this is very apparent on his solo project ‘How About A Game Of Chess’, where he samples the back catalogue of ‘Chess Records’ – one of the premier Soul & Jazz record labels from the 1950’s & 1960’s. The ‘How About A Game Of Chess’ record was originally produced back in 2005 and for me, it is this track ‘See them Smile’ which is one of the highlights… haunting vocals over a rocking beat…. Quality.

12. Masters At Work ‎– Justa "Lil" Dope (Cutting Records)

Produced back in 1991 by Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez and Little Louie Vega, this track is a bonfide classic. To this day, it consistently crosses musical boundaries, dropped by House, Breaks, Techno and Oldschool DJ’s alike, which to me is a signature of a classic record. Famously sped up to 45RPM by DJ Fabio & Grooverider at their club Rage in the early 1990’s, this track became one of the building blocks of Jungle/Drum & Bass. Everything about this record I love, whether it’s the amazing breaks, the classic horn rift or the vocal samples…. Every home should have a copy.

13. Fat Freddy’s Drop – Bohannon (The Drop)

The one and only contemporary track featured in this #DuskDubs volume, is from New Zealand. Appearing on their 2013 album ‘Blackbird’, this instrumental oozes serious funk alongside an infectious beat. If you get a chance to see them live - do so, their amazing blend of Dub, Soul, Funk and Jazz has caught the attention of the world…..and they seriously know how to dub a tune out I’m telling ya…..

14. Maya Angelou with Burial & FourTet - On The Pulse Of A Moth (Mash-Up)

Another cheeky Mash Up, this time featuring the poem ‘On The Pulse Of A Morning’ by Maya Angelou which was read during the 1993 Presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton (later to be sampled by Mr Good Looking himself LTJ Bukem on the 1995 classic ‘Horizons’). This leads into Burial + Four Tet’s collaboration ‎ ‘Moth’ which was released on Four Tet’s label Text Records back in 2009. It’s a 4 to the floor eerie dubbed out house track, that the likes of only Burial can create …..Deep

15. Innerzone Orchestra - People Make The World Go Round (Planet E)

Produced back in 1999 in Detroit, by the don that is Mr. Carl Craig under his alias Innerzone Orchestra, this version of The Stylistics classic from 1971, brings this organic soul classic into the electronic age…..simply sublime.

"This week we are happy to announce the return of the mighty Original Gidman.

Normally, I write a short bio about the selector of the week. This time, I’ll keep it brief, simply because Gidman has treated us to a full and detailed description of his selections, so I won’t keep you. All I will say, is that Original Gidman is a major driving force behind Dusk Dubs, without him holding us all together, this wouldn't happen. So, a massive salute Gids! You sir, are a ledge!

2. Snowman – Rise (All City Records)

This beat-heavy instrumental is featured on the 1st 7 Inch that was part of the 7x7 series pressed up by All City Records in Dublin… Produced by Snowman – A member of the Jack Sample Professionals (Fat City US). ….“Heavy beats and very melodic…. (5 Stars)”

3. Smith & Mighty - Higher Dub Feat. MarylinMcFarlane (Studio !K7)

Featured on the Smith & Mighty’s ‘Retrospective’album, this track oozes ‘Dubbed-Out’ class with gorgeous vocals by Marylin McFarlane. Smith & Mighty are a Dub/Drum and Bass/Trip-Hop group from Bristol, consisting of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. Their first releases in the late 1980s, were breakbeat covers of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "Walk on By”. They went on to produce "Wishing on a Star" for Fresh Four and Massive Attack's first single, "Any Love”……“Dubbed out bliss”.

4. Dr. Alimantado - Gimmie My Gun (Greensleeves)

Originally released in 1978 and featuring on the album "Best Dressed Chicken In Town’. This track features the vocal talents of Jamican deejay Dr. Alimantado, over the classic backing track of Gregory Isaacs' ‘Thief a Man’. It would be familiar to all those that were hitting the Jungle/Drum & Bass clubs around 1993 as it was heavily sampled by Smokey Joe on Wha' Dat (Gimmie My Gun) on Labello Blanco Records….. “A Jamacian Deejay Standard…. POW !!”

5. Walkner & Mostl - Heaven Or Hell (G-Stone Recordings)

Released back in the year 2000, on Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister’s infamous
G-Stone label out of Austria, the track was produced byUwe Walkner and Karl Moestl and packs a dubbed-out punch that is synonymous with everything that is released on G-Stone……. “Austrian Quality – As per usual”

6. Peace Orchestra - Double Drums (G-Stone Recordings)

While Richard Dorfmeister was producing his ‘pet project’ Tosca, Peter Kruder was going solo with the Peace Orchestra. Released back in 1999, this track is a classic example of Kruder’s ability to twist and dub-out a ‘Bossa’ sounding track alongside a funky double bass-line….. “Funky as F**K”.

7. Space Dimension Controller - Transatlantic Landing Bay (R&S Records)

Released on the legendary label that is R&S Records, this track features on the Mini LP/EP ‘Temporary Thrillz’ . Space Dimension Controller aka Jack Hamill produces deep spaced out house and ambient soundscapes that the listener can fall into…. “sophisticated sci-fi boogie at its best”.

9. S-Express - Coma II (A.M. O.K.) (Rhythm King)

Located on Side 2 of the Mark Moore’s sophomore album ‘Original Soundtrack’ and released by the classic British Label Rhythm King in 1989 , this squelchy-acid track is miles apart from the commercial releases of ‘Superfly Guy’ or ‘Hey Music Lover’. ……”It’s haunted my musical mind ever since, and will now hopefully haunt yours….!!”.

10. The Transit Kings - The Last Lighthouse Keeper(Malicious Damage)

For those that don’t know, The Transit Kings are a collective made up from, KLF dons Jimmy Cauty and AlexPaterson , occasional Pink Floyd collaborator Guy Pratt and Dom Beken. Released in 2006 on The Orbs home label Malicious Damage, this track features the vocal meanderings of Simon Day as ‘The Last Lighthouse Keeper’ – Comical as well as poignant….. “Simply put – out of this world”

11. The Pioneers - I Need Your Inspiration (Justin Robertson Remix) (Trojan Records)

Released in 2007 and part of the Trojan Takeover project, where a handful of contemporary producers were invited to remix favourites from Trojan’s back catalogue and put their mark on them in celebration of its 40th anniversary. The soulful-reggae original was created by The Pioneers back in 1970 and Justin Robertson turns in a dubbed out break-beat heavy remix that transforms itself into a ska-skank-out….. “Killer Ska alongside soulful vocals…. ”

12. Bomb The Bass - Bug Powder Dust (Kruder &Dorfmeister Remix) (Stoned Heights)

Amazingly, this was first released in 1996 and brought Tim Simenon AKA Bomb The Bass back to prominence amongst the electronica world. Remixed by Kruder &Dorfmeister and featuring on their classic double remix album ‘The K&D Sessions’, this track is one of my favourite remixes of theirs……”Great flow in a dubbed-out style… love it”

13. Meat Beat Manifesto - Radio Babylon (Version Galore) (Play It Again Sam Records)

What can I say about this track ? …. The original was massive back in 1991 in the Rave/Hardcore scene and still holds up to this day. Produced and remixed by the British don that is Jack Dangers (….in my eyes and ears ‘THE’ professor of Dub/Bass manipulation), this track just nails the dub infused break-beat sound coming out back in 1991. I recently got to see Meat Beat Manifesto live, twice in the last few years and I can assure you that they still have the ‘Dub Magic’…. “When this got played…the venue wentoff !!”

14. SLM - Nice & Slow (Tone Def Records)

Released back in 1992 on the Tone Def label alongside Hardcore/Jungle acts such as SoundCorp, 4 Horsemen Of The Apocalypse and DJ Harry & Point Blank, this track with it’s reggae infused bass-line used to rip the sound-system in AWOL at The Paradise Club, Islington in London – where I resided during the years of 91-92…..”this brings back great memories and even though the beats are fast…its that bassline that fits the #DuskDubs bill”.

15. Mark Pritchard – Heavy As Stone (Deep MediRecords)

Whatever Mr Pritchard touches, he seems to be able to turn it into ‘musical gold’, and it’s no different here ! Released recently on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint in 2010, this track is seriously heavy….. I’ll leave the online record store Boomkat to explain… “soul-stirring female vox, elegiac keys and even a glimmer of likembe over 4/4 steppers patterns, all anchored with that sublime bass-weight. This is heart-in-the-mouth material, tears on the dancefloor anthem business. It's a real no-brainer”…. “…Here Here”
