Recent Record Buys.....for April
Underground Vegetable 7" - Melting Pot. (Strictly limited Australian import white label 45)
Two sides of funky reggae from a mysterious Australian source. Side A actually sounds like Boris Gardiner's original version of reggae-funk breaks classic "Melting Pot", while the flip features a slower funk band version of Melting Pot.
RED ASTAIRE/SUGARLOAF GANGSTERS/SWING SESSION - Gamm Doin James Vol 2 (GAMMJB002/A)
"After the hugely popular "Doin' James Part 1" we finally have the equally good 'Part 2' in the series! Red Astair, Sugarloaf Gangsters and Swing Session all provide their own 2008 takes on the Godfather of soul with some ultra funky cuts. Gamm deliver once again", says Phonica records.
Uptown Funk Empire - Now/Do The Boogie 7" (Soulab)
After Metropolitan Jazz Affair, The Dynamics and Mr President, master of musical ubiquity Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart proudly presents Uptown Funk Empire, a burning tribute to one of his all time greatest loves: Funk.
Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart, as a self-taught musician and typical teenager, started playling guitar, bass and keyboards at age 15, covering James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Cream in his bedroom and, later in college bands. His first releases are in the mid 90s, with deep house and disco live bands and various electronic projects. He quickly develops and shows very special skills for vintage disco/funk productions with a contemporary flavor. This gifted boy's been working with artists such as Amp Fiddler, Archie Shepp, Mr Day, Paul Randolph... and for many recording labels such as I Still Music (usa), Favorite Recordings (france), Infracom (germany), Further Out (uk)...
Uptown Funk Empire is an exciting and ambitious project, worthy of its name.
While the first album is simply called "The Empire Strikes back", it's no joke...
Forget the whole revival thing, this sounds like an actual rebirth of the real funky stuff.

It's like being back to the better days of Funk without a travel machine... the vibe is vintage but the sound is fresh...
That's not funky music, that's FUNKY MUSIC !
This album is huge and it covers all the golden age Groove styles : Boogaloo, Soul, Disco, Boogie, Funk... but the music flows in the hands of a gifted modern producer. Bruno " Patchworks" Hovart plays bass, keyboards, computers... handling with love all composition, programming, arrangements, vocals...
With brilliant vocal featurings by silky Juan Rozoff, Brit-Soul legend Noel Mc Koy at his best, high-voltage divas Ange & Janice... and the funkysoul brother Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart himself on the mic... it's pure funkiness !
Beware, "The Empire Strikes Back" and is kicking... so get up & dance ! (Website)
NAOMI SHELTON & THE GOSPEL QUEENS - What have you done/I'll take the long road 7"
"Naomi Shelton first lifted her soulful voice into our family back in the Desco days of the late 1990's. Under her maiden name, Naomi Davis, she gave us Fourty First Street Breakdown which has become a secret weapon for funk DJ's. Next came the coveted Wind Your Clock 10, which surfaced only as test pressing due to the record company's untimely demise. Later she fronted Sugarman and Co. delivering 2001's Promised Land.
All of these have earned her a box seat in the theater of Funk & Soul collectors. However there is another side of Naomi that has been stirring folks longer and deeper than any funk record could ever. Like most great Soul singers, Naomi is first and foremost a Gospel singer. She has spent her life lifting her voice in churches from Alabama to Brooklyn. Though her Gospel voice (and true last name of Shelton) has been a part of the Daptone Family's life for years, performing under the musical direction of the legendary Cliff Driver whose band often featured members of the Daptone rhythym section, it has never before been allowed to fully blossom on wax in it's most natural, beautiful, and powerful form."
"As good a slice of authentic gospel funk as you're gonna hear!
Daptone has a good track record when it comes to unearthing authentic funk/ soul singers...Naomi Shelton is the latest in line and doesn't disappoint.
Former vocalist with Sugarman and Co, Naomi is now a solo artist in her own right and on this her debut outing delivers a truly awesome gospel vocal that fits perfectly over the hammond driven backing track...underpinned by the ultra tight Daptone rhythm section..Top Stuff!" Fat City Records....
Various - Nitrogen Trip Hop Sources from the past 12 Inch (Compost Records 022-1)
"This sampler is from an early Compost Records compilation features the stunning Balek from Marc Moulin under his seminal 70s alias Placebo on a nice loud pressing. Moulin brooding electronic breaks driven jazz helped shape many decades of modern music. Everyone from Portishead to DJ Shadow to Dan the Automator to Aim owe much to the pioneering and tireless jazz fusion work of Moulin in the 70s." Fat City Records.
Tracklisting:
a1 Placebo - Balek (4:19)
a2 Alberto Baldan Bembo - Nitrogen (4:20)
b1 Michael Bundt - The Brain Of Oskar Panizza (9:43)
b2 Jan Jankeje - South Indian Line (2:29)

Thanks Jack !!!!
Finally, my vinyl copy of the new Meat Beat Manifesto album arrived on Saturday, and its a killer.
Boomkat Records says "Following on from last weeks heavyweight cuts culled from this album, MBM deliver their first full album proper for Planet Mu. Latching on to the dubstep sound with electric fervour, MBM's Jack Dangers admits a stylistic resonance with his own styles resulting in an album of weighted dubstep variations relying on his much sought after production skills and abilities to create exceedingly heavy Beats. 'Hold the mic' bolts bashy double time breakbeats toasted by Daddy Sandy, onto unweildy basslines designed for maximum floor destruction, and kicking the album off in fine style. 'Children of the earth' cuts a much more standard dubstep figure with hung halfstep rhythms, before 'house of unique stink' returns to his dub and techno roots with a sound that could have come from any time between 1990 and today. Elsewhere we jumpcut from bashout breaks attacks on '(live) and direct (live)' to Milanese styled electronica steppers on 'Less' and standout bassbin burial cut 'return to bass'. Heavy".
Also available is this 12" Sampler from the album which includes:
1. LONELY SOLDIER (REMIX)
2. HELLFIRE
3. GUNS N LOVERS (REMIX)
....as with the album, this release is on the Planet Mu label.... which has seen releases from dubstep icon Benga.
Both the album and the 12" Sampler are awesome. I can't beleive that this is MBM's 10th studio album...and it seems like he's not running out of ideas...
Here's what Phonica Records write..."New full length from seminal industrial band Meat Beat Manifesto!! Led by sound sculptor and producer extraordinaire Jack Dangers, MBM is continually evolving. It’s tenth album pushes musical boundaries further than it has before, creating a masterpiece of electronica and dubstep."I feel like Dub has always been part of my sound" says Jack. Guest vocalist Daddy Sandy features on "I Hold the Mic!", and the techno-tinged "Spanish Vocoder" touches on his his early techno roots. "Every record is different," Jack explains, "and in this record I focused on what I like to do versus what other people like me to do: beats, bass and distortion."

Karen P presents... Broad Casting at CARGO
I've recently been checking the listings of the "Karen P presents... Broad Casting" night, held at Cargo, Rivington Street, London. Each night looks superb so far and the upcoming listing looks a real corker.....
17 04 08 : MULATU & THE HELIOCENTRICS
With support from the Red Bull Music Academy, Karen P's Broad Casting night has been able to cast it's net even further a field. Not satisfied with pulling in the big names from Scandinavia (Little Dragon in February and Jimi Tenor in March) April's instalment sees Karen P hauling in composer, musician and father of the Ethio-Jazz sound, Mulatu Astatke, to play exclusively live at Cargo. With a backing band made up of the fantastic Heliocentrics.
Click Here for Mulatu Astatke featuring The Heliocentrics Live At Cargo
DJ sets coming from Karl Injex, Gilles Peterson and of course curator of the night, Karen P, April's Broad Casting is one to get down to.
JIMI TENOR & KABU KABU
Musician and composer Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist. He is known as a productive musician whose work lies beyond current trends, and also as a performer who combines the finest elements of afro-american music, spontaneous silliness and shameless glamour in an original way. Jimi Tenor will grace Cargo's stage with his presence on this, the third instalment ofthe excelent "Karen P presents... Broad Casting" night.

Besides being a professional musician for almost 20 years, Jimi Tenor (born Lassi Lehto, 1965, Lahti, Finland) has also practised photography, directed short films and designed clothes and musical instruments. The electro-mechanic instruments built by Jimi Tenor and designer Matti Knaapi are not intended to be pieces of art on display at exhibitions, though have sometimes ended up as such. They emerge from musical needs, and are mainly made of scrap material. The instruments have been used at full blast during recording and on stage, so some of them have been wrecked.
The music industry has found it difficult to operate with Jimi Tenor at times. The hard rock driven Finland of the 80s considered him weird and too marginal. In Britain in the 90s he was seen as a trendy techno jazz artist, but Tenor soon confused the pioneering electro label Warp by delivering an imaginary - and expensive - soundtrack album with a symphony orchestra, instead of making minimalistic hits.
Today Jimi Tenor is an established European artist who operates outside the mainstream. His audience consists of clubbers and alternative rock enthusiasts looking for new perspective, but also of jazz and funk rebels. Those who understand that even unconventional pop music can move your body and heart.
07 02 08 : LITTLE DRAGON & CHARLES WEBSTER
Inspired by a series of fantastic compilations on Sonar Kollektiv a new night is born.
Karen P has had a huge impact on the world of radio and provided a much-needed platform to an incredibly talented pool of musicians and performers from all over the world. From her work with Gilles Peterson on Worldwide to the creation and production of the groundbreaking underground radio station, Red Bull Music Academy Radio and now her string of excitingly fresh podcasts have set her up as a hugely influential tastemaker in the scene. The Observer recently hand-picked Karen as one of the brightest and best rising stars in her field by naming her in the Top 10 of the media category for the ‘Future 500’ recognising the movers and shakers of the future.
Tonight we celebrate the launch of her new monthly night with a little tribute to Peacefrog Records (www.peacefrog.com). Responsible for hundreds of stand-out releases scaling many genres; tonight we present two exclusive performances representing their past and present, showing just how much they have achieved in their 17 years.
All the way from Sweden and already making waves with their excellent self-titled debut album, Little Dragon pay an exclusive visit to the UK.

Fresh from a tour with Jose Gonzalez, they bring a similar approach to their music as their compatriot and label-mate, offering up compelling, wintry melodies that soothe, bewitch and beguile. www.little-dragon.se
Now into his second decade as a true innovator in the electronic music scene, Charles Webster (Miso/Peacefrog) is one of the few real mould-breakers in an increasingly stale & predictable dance music world (though whether a man whose favourite artist is Rickie Lee Jones, and whose records ooze such soul and depth should really ever be pigeonholed as dance is another debate...). Charles has sold over 100,000 albums without ever being considered 'mainstream' or having had a major hit single. For the opening night of Karen P presents… “Broad Casting” Charles Webster has prepared a special laptop set with some very special guests. Expect the unexpected!
