Floating Points - Love Me Like This 12 Inch (R2 022LTD500)

"Brand new single from Floating Points on R2!!!

London lad Floating Points has come correct with this new school boogie/hip hop masterpiece. 'Love Me Like This' will have you knodding your head from the first beat, with its catchy-as-hell plodding soulful loop gradually growing momentum with twisted synth stabs before a stripped down raw breakdown consisting of just the infectious 'Love Me Like This' vocal hook before kicking back in the with squelching bass and beautiful keys!

Fans of Dam-Funk, Flying Lotus etc will love this!

Huge support from Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Mulatu Astatke And The Helicentrics - Inspiration Imformation LP (STRUT 040LP)

"The Heliocentrics – the London-based collective centered around drummer Malcolm Catto, bassist Jake Ferguson and producer Mike Burnham – first performed with legendary Ethiopian Jazz composer/ arranger/ pianist/ vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke in early 2008. The pairing went so well – Astatke celebrated the band as the Heliocentrics performed the classic songs Astatke recorded for the Ethiopian Amha label in the late 60s and early 70s – that a collaborative recording session became a must. Thus began the landmark sessions in the Heliocentrics’ cavernous studio that resulted in Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3.

Though the ensemble run though some of Mulatu’s classic recordings, the bulk of this album is newly recorded psychedelic jazz with a funk and rock edge. Astatke’s presence clearly challenged the band to write and record an album worthy of the legend. From melancholic modal musings to thunderous funk, Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3 follows in the lines of the landmark, impossible-to-categorize albums that Astatke and the Heliocentrics have offered to the world.

Mark Pritchard - ?/The Hologram 10 Inch (HOHUM003)

"The inescapable figure behind the brilliant Harmonic 313 project and countless other pseudonyms finally releases the track that has had Dubstep fans scratching their heads in anticipation and reverent confusion for the last 12 months. We're talking about '?', a darkened scene setter that has most famously been picked up by Digital Mystik Mala as the opener to his sets of late. Reminiscent of his revered Global Communications productions, but crossbred with the storm-cloud-brewing-blues of Earth, it's an epic proposition that we urge you to check. 'The Hologram' on the flip could be an offcut from the last Portishead album, a tense head nodder with echo chamber reverbs and subtler elements combined with haunting Radiophonic atmospherics". Quantic & His Combo Barbaro/Nostalgia 77 FEAT. The Fiction - Tru Thoughts Presents Black Gold 7 Inch (TRU 7189P)

"The second installment in Tru Thoughts’ Black Gold series of limited vinyl DJ weapons features two killer cover versions set to become Tru Thoughts classics: Quantic And His Combo Bárbaro give you their spin on “Wandering Star” by Portishead, and Nostalgia 77 hooks up with the Fiction Trio to take on Eminem’s “My Name Is”.

Both tracks on this double A side 7” are taken from the upcoming ‘Tru Thoughts Covers’ album, which is coming out later in 2009 (on the Unfold imprint) and features some of the label’s biggest covers from over the years as well as a number of other exclusives from Jamie Woon, Bugz In The Attic and Lizzy Parks amongst others.

The DJs are loving these two beauties – here are a couple of the reactions so far:
Boca 45 – “Brilliant 45! Both sides will fit perfectly in ‘Boca plays his 45s’ sets. Genius idea of Quantic to do a calypso version of wondering star!” 9/10
Ashley Beedle – “As always a great treat from Tru Thoughts to get the Black Gold 7“s. Both sides do the business. Class.” 10/10

This Black Gold 7” is the first ever release to feature the sound of Quantic And His Combo Bárbaro, the new band that Will Holland has assembled in his current home of Cali, Colombia. More from them soon…

The Black Gold 7” is limited to 500 copies worldwide.

Nathan Davies - The Best Of Nathan Davis '65-76 (JAZZMAN LP026)

"Nathan Davis has been an internationally significant figure in jazz throughout the latter half of the 20th century, but to many his musical legacy remains little known. This album presents the music of Nathan Davis as it developed through the '60s and '70s, from bop through modal to world sounds and funk.
Having turned his back on the US he spent the '60s living in Europe, playing and recording with jazz luminaries such as Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey and Eric Dolphy, before returning at the end of the decade to take up a career in teaching in Pittsburgh. This collection includes recordings from his most significant albums as recorded in France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey and the US. Our selection displays a variety of musical styles, with performances by Davis on tenor & soprano saxophone and flute.

The LP liners contain previously unpublished photographs and detailed biographical information, documenting a career which has seen him forge an individual path through the history of postwar jazz and help to pioneer jazz education in the US at the University of Pittsburgh.

Astonishingly much of Davis' work never saw general release in the US or the UK, despite his albums being true gems of modern jazz. Less still has been re-released, and until now there has never been a representative compilation or career overview. And so it is with great pride that we at Jazzman present the first ever anthology of Nathan Davis.

The liner notes contain biographical detail and also details of the recordings themselves, as gleaned from our interviews with Nathan Davis and his professional colleagues. We include pictures of and information on the original LPs which are now coveted collectors items. We also answer questions as to why he turned his back on the US to develop a career in Europe, his love of ethnic music, and why he spurned the limelight and opportunity to achieve fame. We also reveal his current interests and reflect upon his life as professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh, and we hope this album will be the first step toward the wider recognition that his contribution to jazz so richly deserves. (Jazzman Records Site)
